Re: Camberwell Beauty Norfolk 28/06/10
No sign of the Camberwell Beauty today which is a shame as would have been nice for the weekend. The Cranes/Spoonbills are definately Spoonbills and probably part of a flock that is roving up and down the coast, nice addition to the day

Re: June 2010 Sightings
Early afternoon at Vange Marshes RSPB reserve I noted 16 Small and 1 Large, 2 Large Whites, 10 Small Heath and a Common Blue. Benfleet Downs from mid afternoon had a good selection of butterflies though numbers of certain species well down on last year; 2-4 White-letter Hairstreaks on the favoured b...

Re: June 2010 Sightings
Went searching for White Admirals are Belfairs Woods Nature Reserve this afternoon as the weather was very good early on however by the time I arrived at 4.20pm it was overcast and muggy thus not a sniff of any admirals. However there was an impressive count of Heath Fritillaries with a total of 333...

Re: June 2010 Sightings
Made visits to three of the main Essex colonies of Heath Fritillaries today to see what the state of the population is. Started at Pound Wood where counted 156 with most being in the main clearing around the pylons. There was also a Meadow Brown. Then walked through to Little Haven but found two Hea...

Re: June 2010 Sightings
Had about a dozen Heath Fritillaries in Blean Wood yesterday, a brand new species for us!!! Our first, a female on hogweed and bramble flowers, was at the edge of the Hicks Forstal Road car park and took...ooooh...twenty seconds to locate after we left the car. What an obliging lifer! Through the w...

Re: June 2010 Sightings
a couple of hours spent in Hockley Woods, Essex today revealed a count of only 31 Heath Fritillaries. This is marked contrasts to the 'hundreds' here last year. Some of the clearings are becoming overgrown so hope that the butterflies find the very good looking wide ride at the east end of the wood....

Re: June 2010 Sightings
Yesterday, 5th June, ventured south of to Park Corner Heath for one of my very few out of local area visits this year where had at least 11 SPBFritters, all looking pretty fresh. Several were well behaved up to about 10.30 which by then they were fully warmed up and rarely settled. Few other butterf...

Re: June 2010 Sightings
Numbers of Heath Fritillaries are way way down on last year at the Essex sites; I counted only 23 at Little Havens EWT today (counted 341 there on 6th June last year) with most along the sides of the path that disects the clearings around the pylons, there were none at all in the main clearing which...

Re: May 2010 sightings
Hi Steve - Good description, thanks; I reckon TQ836916 is roughly where you mean. I usually visit Pound Wood (just south across the A127) under the electricity pylons....I reckon about TQ821888. I was going to go on Saturday last - but high winds put me off - maybe this weekend coming.... ..and Jac...

Re: May 2010 sightings
I’m planning Hockley Woods on Wednesday. Thursday or Friday is provisionally planned for Park Corner Heath. Hockley is actually quite hard to find - well, the northern car park is rather hidden away in a built up area at TQ834923. Then walk south into the wood, down a dip and across a stream, up th...

Re: May 2010 sightings
Not had any opportunity for any butterflying this year, with exception of Holly Blues in the garden, until today so pleasant to see the first Heath Fritillaries of the year at Hockley Woods, Essex with 4. The overcast conditions, and then rain, meant that they were not on the wing and many other wer...
