Re: Fracking – Barton Moss Greater Manchester
Jack, I think in answer to your question, it may just be that fracking will poison the environment. There is evidence which would suggest such. Are you sad or bothered that your OP has developed into something of a discussion about the pros and cons of fracking? As for what wildlife was/is there, c...

Stunning video footage Roger and beautifully rendered sound tracks. I watched and loved every minute of them.

Re: Summer 2012 Competition
Thanks for the votes folks. Sorry to have been so tardy in responding but I have been away and then family illnesses have forced me to forget hobbies for a while. Nonetheless, I was very pleased to get 3rd spot and envious of all the other photo's and opportunities of 'being there'. All top 5 very g...

Re: (Un)Common Blue.....
A couple more seen on my local patch and reports of emergence from southwest of the county of Suffolk. Maybe we'll see more of this brood.

Re: (Un)Common Blue.....
Certainly this year and last, they are uncommon around these parts of Suffolk. My local patch had 2 showing last week, but that's all. Plenty of LHP but few adults to be seen. On another site I saw a male. Maybe much of the second brood is still emerging in the warmer weather but it certainly looks ...

Re: July 2011 Competition
Thanks again folks. :) I agree that the standards have again been very high, but it's no wonder since butterflies are indeed a wonderful subject and an inspiration. Fishiee's comments are definitely worth looking at again as his work on the Wood Whites shows what can be done. The thing is, why not d...

Re: July 2011 Competition
Thanks everybody :D . This comes as quite a shock and is very humbling . I really thought John’s or Nigel’s Marblies would win since the compositions of both were excellent. Top of them all for me though was probably Vince’s Brown Argus. Simply stunning and sharp and with some nice background detail...
Re: July 2011
Thanks Lee. As you say, what little protection SSB's have is from sale although of course they are protected on SSSI's as is practically everything else on it. This doesn't secure their future but simply prevents them being removed from the site. Heathlands as we know are dynamic, undergoing change ...
Re: July 2011
:) Yes. Thanks Piers and Nick. We shouldn't get too depressed though. There has been a lot of good work by volunteers and although things got bad with some of the sites, others were turned around and things improved and new habitat has also been created resulting in a successful translocations to an...
Re: July 2011
Hi Piers The Sandlings Heaths of Suffolk have had a hard time this year in so far as there has been a far poorer showing of Bell Heather, the most common nectar source for the butterfly in the area and fewer SSB's. Some of our colonies would seem to be producing far fewer adult butterflies which may...

Ok thanks Piers. It was interesting to have your views in any case.

Re: July 2011
This is helpful Guy, and I am sure you are right. Medium-sized as these QOS's may be, they are very powerful flyers and so a little trip across the North Sea would surely be not too great an obstacle. If there were a population eruption, it sounds extremely plausible that some move across to these s...
Re: July 2011
Hi Piers. Thanks for the reply. However, rumours are just rumours and widely rumoured is not proof. Sadly it is too easy to 'gas' behind the scenes without facts. I try not to be involved with rumours since it is my belief that rumour spreading is at best unhelpful but at worst, can malign someone's...
Re: July 2011
Thanks Guy for your comment. Hi Piers, I am amused at your comment, so thanks too. I have a question for you...Why do you say 'highly dubious population of the 1990's' ? :? Do you have information to suggest that the string of 90's sightings was anything other than a genuine breeding colony? I would...

Re: June 2011 Competition
Technical issues... Why when I click on a picture and click off, does the image to the right of it also get an extra view added to its tally? It doesn't happen if you click on the return to album link, or it seems, on the back arrow, but any other situation it appears that you ahve looked at another...
