Re: Underside of Blue for ID
Thanks Rupert and Thanks Guy, I'm very pleased with that confirmation. It was a very hot day when I was there and not many of the "blues" were settling so I spent a few hours chasing up and down the hillside, which I enjoyed but found it exhausting! This is the first Adonis and Chalhill Bl...

Re: Skipper and a moth for ID
Hi Deborah, the moth is likely a Mother of Pearl, Pleuroptya ruralis. It's a worn individual and the angle for ID is a bit tricky so not 100% certain.

Common Heath Ematurga atomaria. Often see these flying over the heather nearby. Females are much lighter.

Underside of Blue for ID
I took this photo at Milk Hill Pewsey Downs this week. I did see Adonis and Common Blue but never saw any Chalkhill Blue's (although they are thought to be present). Help with ID would be great.
Re: Adonis
Hi David Thank you. That's great Stroud is much nearer. Yatton Down is too far so we were going to leave it. We will try Rodborough today. Cheers.
Adonis
Hi, Which is the nearest site for Adonis to Gloucester. I think it may be West Yatton down which I gleaned from here, is that correct?

Re: Marbled White and Adonis
Hi Matsukaze, Thanks for the information that's very helpful of you. White Sheet Hill does sound the better of the two so will try there, but your mention of Long Knoll being an undiscovered gem of a site sounds tempting as well so if the weather is kind to us we will give that some thought and mayb...

Re: Marbled White and Adonis
HI Kev, What a good idea we have been to Denbies Hillside once when we stayed at Leatherhead, can't remember what that was for, but it is a great place so will most likely give it another try. I never even gave the Silver-spotted Skipper a thought and looking at the flight times your right, with a b...

Re: Marbled White and Adonis
Using the flight times and sites guide and maps etc. Thanks. We have decided to have a couple of trips. The first one will be the first week in June to Bin Combe or Haddon Hill in the hope of seeing the Heath Fritillary then back to White Sheet Hill or Long Knoll for the Adonis. Not planned the seco...

Re: Marbled White and Adonis
Thanks Matsukaze, Yes I will have to re-visit Collard Hill sometime. when we were there although we were a week or so too early for the Large Blue the display of orchids did make up for it.

Re: Marbled White and Adonis
Just realised that what I have posted is a bit off. Not every year but occasionally we plan a week away looking for different species. What we were planning to do this year is choose a site or group of sites where we would spend a week and might have an opportunity to see ones we have not seen befor...

Re: Marbled White and Adonis
Hi Pete, Thanks for the reply. I'm from Lancashire and like most people I would like to have a look at as many species of butterfly as I can wherever in the UK that may take me. I have seen 46 species and according to my list there are another 13 that I could look for (not certain how accurate my li...

Re: Lulworth and Essex Skipper information needed
Hi Bill,
Well I think the Lulworth sounds promising and hopefully too the Large Blue. Will be checking the sightings page regularily. Thanks.
Hi Matsukaze,
Thanks for the advice, I wont look too hard for the Essex then.

Re: Lulworth and Essex Skipper information needed
H All, I am travelling from Lancashire to stay at Yeovil on the 7th to 11th June. My plan is to look for Large Blue at Collard Hill then to Lulworth Cove, hoping to see the Lulworth Skipper. I have just read the previous posts started by Bill (Willrow) and curious to know how he/you got on. Is my ti...

Re: North Western Lake District
Hi Trev, There is a farm on the west side of Bassenthwaite Lake where Butterfly Conservation have an interest. There is Marsh Fritillary there plus others as well as good numbers of day flying moth's including The Forester. The owner Paul Barnes is a friendly person and often seems quite happy for p...
