Like the subject says, we bought some peas from the supermarket and a caterpillar arrived with. Air miles say Kenya (sorry), so any help identifying would be gratefully received. Might be something ordinary, might be something interesting.

Re: Large Blues at Rodborough Common
Superb ! A 'Lifer' for me. Thank you for the butterfly intelligence SG. A week of sunshine ahead, a week of annual leave and reunited with my sickly car presents opportunities for me. You're very welcome indeed! I hope you manage to catch a glimpse soon! I hope to bump into you some time this week ...

Large Blues at Rodborough Common
I'm not sure whether anybody has clocked this yet, but the Large Blues at Rodborough are looking happy and magnificent. Saw 3-5 of them, feeding on thyme but no egg-laying/mating/courting behaviours. Relatively territorial and a good sign of things to come at that wonderful site. I'm looking forward...
Re: June 2022
We saw a few Lulworths when we went to Dorset, they're looking happy! Down in Durdle Door.
Image here(still from a video) is a Large Blue we saw today at Rodborough Common. I'm happy to see them out, with about 3-5 in total!

Hello Soloman. You must be the young man I referred to in my entry above. Your photo must be the same pair of Large Blues as mine. It certainly is me :) what a pleasure to see you on here!! And what a funny similarity and coincidence!! Well you're certainly bang on the money - a joyous and treasure...

Re: Butterfly documentary
Shall do, thank you!
Interviews generally predicated around "why did you fall in love with Butterflies" and more than happy to travel about, so thank you very much for your willingness.
I'll keep a passive eye on this thread and will definitely let you know closer to the time, cheers.

Re: First Green Hairstreaks of Rodborough Common
Mr Oates informed us that the previous record for sighting was 30th March. I have been feeling disquieted by the mildness of this winter, and to have my suspicions confirmed by such early green companionship is making me all too worried about the year to come. Regardless, they made lovely company fo...

First Green Hairstreaks of Rodborough Common
First time meeting the lovely Matthew Oates, who, like us, was on the look out for some early Green Hairstreaks at Rodborough common today. We had one brief but clear sighting of a Green Hairstreak in flight, then another glimpse of two small Hairstreak-sized butterflies fighting in the air. Finally...

Butterfly documentary
Hello all you beautiful butterfly people! I am currently looking at making a documentary following the seasons, with a focus on butterflies. It'll hopefully span the year and explore ways the world changes as the sun gets closer and further away from us, along with my own relationship to nature &...

Re: Hazards of Butterflying
Honestly dog poo is the epitome of selfishness. Especially in conversation sites where grazing cattle are essential to the survival of the butterfly species *cough cough* Rodborough *cough cough*. I absolutely ADORE dogs but my partner hates them. Dog people seem to assume that all others are dog lo...

Re: 2021 - Large Tortoiseshell
Hello all. Back now from our trip to Purbeck and Portland. I'm sad to say that we didn't see anything for long enough to call it definitive while we were down there. Judging by other testimony it's likely that we saw one in flight at Tout Quarry on the 11th Aug, but all I can tell you is "big, ...

Re: Silver-studded Blue sighting
Yes I did suspect that to be the case, and rightfully so - quality of data is everything and I can't imagine how many mis-identifications there are to deal with. It certainly startled me with a "wait... what?", so I can't imagine it would have any different of an effect on a recorder. For ...

Thank you very much, I am extremely happy to be here and have admired your and fellow butterfly compatriots work in Butterfly Conservation and related charities for some time (am 23, have been a BC member - with the family - since the tender age of 3). Is David Simcox on this forum? I took these pho...

Silver-studded Blue sighting
Hi all, I was hoping you may be able to enlighten me here... I was off doing some observations around the Baggy Point National Trust site near Croyde Bay, and stumbled upon a Silver Studded Blue - female. The habitat is perfect for them but I couldn't find any case of them being recorded that far up...

Hello all, and a pleasure to meet you on this fantastic forum. First time member, long time conservation and butterfly nerd. Gosh it's so exciting to hear about various Large Tortoiseshell sightings happening. I'm going away with my partner to the Isle of Purbeck from 10th to 16th Aug and will be ma...

I'm really taken back by how utterly gorgeous everyone's photos have been when looking at this forum. It's a real privilege to have found such a lovely community of fellow Butterfly fans, and I'm honestly a little gutted I haven't found you all sooner! Hello all! Long time Lep fan, first time poster here. I just wanted to say how wonderful it is to see so many beautiful photos being taken. I would like to contribute in my own small way by sharing some of mine, starting with these Large Blue photos I took of them from courtship to just about to mat...
