Re: Bird Book
I appreciate the quick response guys, but. This book appears to be a more "read at home" type. I was looking for the Lewington "pocket guide" type - assuming you rate any of them.
Bird Book
As the Richard Lewington pocket book for GB & I Butterflies is the one most recommended on this forum. Is there a similar one that you guys would recommend for birds. Thanks.

Overwintering.
Only into my second year and still learning - be gentle.
The one Red Admiral (of two) that I got close to today, showed age. Butterflies when overwintering is only the larvae stage, right. If correct how can an early hatch look tatty so quick. Or can the caterpillar itself survive in hibernation?

Re: Small White v Female Orange Tip
Thanks guys "the forewings of the female orange tip look very rounded" is the thing that I feel will be the most noticeable for me. I'll put it to practice on my daily (allowed) walk tomorrow. All this beautiful weather we're having around London has at least brought plenty out. Shame I ca...

Only 2 years into butterfly spotting. I can't believe (although no photos) that I saw 7 species / types / varieties - what do you guys say? I live in a busy London borough and have a wonderful nature reserve / conservation a small distance away. I saw Orange Tips, Small Whites / I believe a Large Wh...

Re: Field Guides
Is the laminated, 8 page quick reference guide published from the same Lewington pocket book illustrations or a different author. I don't seem to be able to find it to purchase. I have found one by Harry Styles though. Help please.

Re: Posting photos / pictures etc.
Sorry to pester you Pete, I found the video re. posting photo's etc. thank you. But when I continued with the videos I found that the home page you refer to appears to be different now to what is on the videos. In particular to scroll through all the butterflies you show the "What's that Butter...

Re: Pale Aqua Moth
Thanks for the quick reply. Amazing how easy it is find species on the internet when you google using "emerald" and not "pale aqua" which is how it appeared to me.

Out with the wife and grandchildren to at Laindon Country Park, Essex. I saw this in a meadow on low cut grass at midday. At first I though it was a piece of plastic that was shaped very muck like a butterfly Called the wife over and she authenticated it was indeed a butterfly / moth. Unfortunately ...

Re: Field Guides
Thank you all for your replies. Books wise, I obviously have no trouble ordering the 2 most recommended on the forum. Re. camera. I have to be honest and say that in my 66 years, I have never owned an SLR but have had numerous compacts including digital. I am not so sure I will have the know how to ...

Re: Field Guides
Thanks for the heads up on the book. No, I'm not from Sussex. But all my family from London have moved down (Eastbourne, Horum, Hellingly and Pevensey) and I'm down at least once a month up the downs. I've delayed my own move for many years but will get there. When it comes to photographing do you g...

Field Guides
Hi, first time poster. Got the bug (no pun intended) after a recent butterfly count with the grandkids and a visit to South Downs yesterday. I have read previous posts re. field guides and decided on the Lewington Pocket Book an Laminated guide both endorsed by forum members. If these are short of t...
