Is this a large white caterpillar? Checking photos online and it looks similar, except the inverted yellow 'Y' on its head, also has white markings on its lower sides.
Maybe final instar?

Interesting infomation, I've been considering using flash this year. I can't afford a macro ring flash unit however.... I need a standard flash unit anyhoo so might experiment with that a bit. I tried a very similar thing last year Pete, 1/200 to 2/300 shutter priority but I didn't stop the exposure...

Yeh you could use one of the other focusing points, or manual focus :-) Assuming the butterfly has its wings open and I'm looking from above, I tend to focus on a point half way (in depth) between the closest and furthest away points.
