Re: Skyfish/lying Rods
Jose Escamilla, the bloke who first described ‘skyfish’ was a friend of mine, and believed until his dying day that he had described a new life form. And whilst there are aspects of the work of Trevor James Constable, for example, which still intrigue, I am as sure as I can be that ‘skybeasts’ or ‘r...

Re: Scarce Tortoiseshell sighting!
Having just checked the summary at http://www.ukbms.org/mydata/annual-summary?userID=all I think it should be noted that the records from April 1st (see below) are completely out of synch with those for the rest of the year, and would remind everyone that this is the date that le poisson d'avril swi...

Re: large Tortoiseshells
Thank you Dave, it is nice to know that I haven't lost what little remains of my mind. This is one of the big problems with the Internet. anyone can post anything, and whilst quite often things that are inaccurate do get removed, sometimes people do see them and a new 'meme' (if that is the cirrect ...

large Tortoiseshells
i remember reading within the past four or five years that a naturalist at either a National Trust or Natural England property in south Devon was claiming that large tortoiseshells had bred there. Does anyone have a link for this, or did I completely dream it?

Re: August 2014
On the late morning of Saturday 16th August my friend and colleague Lars Thomas, together with his son, was walking around the village of Hartland when they saw a large tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros) basking in the sun on the perimeter wall of one of the gardens. He watched it for three or fo...

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!
Shetland individual was found in imported lumber and the one earlier this year could have been anything. I'd be surprised if either had much to do with it at all. But it is still a peculiar coincidence, that after no activity at all for sixty years, these reports occur so close to the recent influx..

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!
Remember that there was also a record from the Shetlands in November 2013, http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7273&start=40#p78966 and an anomalous tortoiseshell http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7466 earlier this year. I wonder whether these ...

Patrick Barkham interview about LTB etc
I have been meaning to introduce myself for some time. I have been lurking here for well over a year, but only just got around to joining. I am Jon Downes, of the Centre for Fortean Zoology. Amongst other things I do a monthly webTV show which - this month - features me interviewing Patrick Barkham ...
