Re: Very Late Dark Green Fritillary in Sussex
The butterflies which I saw last week were definately large fritillaries and although I haven't seen a Queen of Spain Fritillary since I visited France in 2014 I do recall they were a little smaller in size compared to a Dark Green Fritillary so I am pretty certain that DGFs are what I saw.

Re: Very Late Dark Green Fritillary in Sussex
Hi All Thanks very much for all your expert opinions, I am no expert but they looked like Dark Green Fritillaries to me but I wasn't able to get really close to them due to the blustery wind, to be honest I never even considered that they could have been another closely related species but now I sup...

Very Late Dark Green Fritillary in Sussex
I had some business in Eastbourne last weekend so when I had a little spare time last Saturday (3rd October) I decided to visit a few of the best butterfly sites in the area just to see which species were still flying this late in the season, I saw 12 different species (Clouded Yellow, Large White, ...

Re: What should I plant?
I would suggest the Seven-Sons Flower (Heptacodium Miconioides) which can either be grown as a small tree (Top Image) or large shrub (Bottom Image) depending on pruning, it can grow to about 15-20 feet high and 10 feet wide and its white flowers are very attractive to a wide range of butterflies, be...

Re: Sedum Carl
I have seen butterflies on various different sedums but sedum spectabile are definately the most attractive to butterflies as well as bees, all sedum spectabile cultivars are very good butterfly plants but from my experience both white ones (iceberg and stardust) and the pale pink one (brilliant) se...

Butterflies of the Costa Almeria
I will be travelling over to Andalucia in mid January for two weeks, I will be viewing several properties along the Costa Almeria during the first few days with the intention of buying a holiday home where I will be living 3-4 months each winter, then I am using the remainder of my holiday to search...

Sedum Carl
I have recently bought 3 Sedum Carl plants so can anyone tell me exactly what species they are and whether they are likely to be as attractive to butterflies and bumble bees as Sedum Spectabile Brilliant for example, I would guess they may well be either a variety of Sedum Spectabile, Sedum Telephiu...

Re: Marseilles checklist 2014
Hi Chris, I must say that I have really enjoyed keeping up to date with this excellent thread over recent months especially all of your lovely pics. I have seen several pics of various butterflies and moths on valerian so I was just wondering whether it is pink flower red valerian (centranthus ruber...

Re: Butterfly Shrub ID Please
Thanks very much mark, I have just been searching Syringa shrubs on the internet and I see that there are now literally hundreds or even thousands of different species / cultivars available, I may well plant one of these in my own garden later this year in any case.

Butterfly Shrub ID Please
Can anyone ID this shrub which proved to be a butterfly magnet yesterday please, it measures approx 7ft by 7ft in size and it was covered in butterflies (25-40 butterflies of 7 different species with about 2/3 of these being Green-veined Whites for the entire hour or so I was there), I have several ...

Re: Psodos Quadrifaria - Best places to see in France
Thanks very much all, it appears that Psodos Quadrifaria is a relatively common and numerous species in the Alps but I will be searching for them in the Massif Central first.
