First butterflies of the year
Hi all, these shots are from my first butterfly hunt of the year at Stover Country Park in Devon.I used my Canon 40D,Sigma 150mm macro and 430ex flash with diffuser, all hand held. 1 Comma http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l5/daveyboys/comma1-1.jpg 2 http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l5/daveyboys/com...

Re: Hand held photos
I hand hold my 150mm Sigma with my 40D often for butterflies.I use a 430EX mounted on a flash bracket with diffuser to get faster shutterspeed etc.I dont find the setup particularly heavy, and often a tripod would mean I would miss opportuities altogether.I use the flash first, then if I get the chan...

Re: Start point shots
Yes I did use flash Sylvia.I used a canon 430EX flashgun mounted on a flash bracket, and a homemade diffuser.I usually have the camera in manual mode and set at F9-F13 and then adjust the shutterspeed accordingly as I go.I find it all works quite well, and a lot easier than trying to set up a tripod i...

High Browns and more
Hi all, I paid a visit to Dunsford on Dartmoor today. The weather was far from perfect, but I did manage to get a few quick shots of a High Brown Fritillary during the sunny spells. The Red admiral was bathing and kept still for me for a while.... Re: small pearl bordered fritillary
Thanks for your comments and confirmation of ID guys.I did try some natural light shots but I did not have my tripod with me and the result was motion blur.I would have been interested to compare myself....lesson learned there I think....dont forget your tripod!

Re: flash
I have started using flash for butterflies.I use FEC to try and balance the light and get better overall exposure.I also use a diffuser to try and prevent the flash being too harsh. Its difficult to get the balance correct sometimes.I use the flash for Dragonflies/Damselflies as well, the diffuser he...
