Re: Maximus

A very slow start to our season so far, so just a quick post of what we've seen so far. It would appear that this season is very advanced in comparison to previous years and I note that both Glanville and Marsh Fritillaries are now on the wing. This may reset slightly during May as it looks like the...

Re: Maximus

Cheers, Wurzel :) Tilshead is a great site and not too demanding 8) I'm sure it would be truly amazing in a good year :D Thanks, David, it's nice to be posting again. Cheers, Trevor, thank you for the recommendation, it's a large site and a lovely place to enjoy a few hours exploring. Unmanaged and ...

Re: Maximus

Well it's been quite a while since I last posted in my personal diary, seven months in fact, where does the time go? Up until the end of June we managed to get out regularly when we were still based in Salisbury. During last summer unfortunately our time was taken up with domestic issues which us ga...

Re: Long-tailed Blue - Favourite Photo of 2024

From what I've read recently, Long-tailed Blues appear to have been a bit thin on the ground in the UK in 2024. I therefore didn't expect to bump into any on our travels. However, in September we were staying at a campsite near Alfold in Surrey. The estate had a lovely walled garden which we visited...

A very nice selection of species from Romania, David, especially the Scarce Fritillary. How many of those are lifers for you?

Re: ernie f

I don't necessarily think that you are paranoid, ernie. A week ago we were chatting to a guy at a Wiltshire site who told us this story. He had found a couple of Marsh Fritillary abs on another well known Wiltshire site. Hoping to show his friend they returned a few days later. While searching for t...

Re: Wurzel

You managed to get some great underside shots of the Small Blues and Grizzlies at Martin Down, Wurzel, in spite of the 'Great British' weather  :)
Martin Down seems to be our nemesis site for Leps, three visits and not very much seen

Re: Maximus

Cheers, Wurzel, they were fresh, but not large numbers :? The weather can make or break a site visit, it's a shame that it was the wrong way round for you yesterday :( It went against us in my next post and it's a pain when you're travelling a reasonable distance  Green Down 6th June After kee...

Re: Maximus

Yes the third one was a good looking Frit, Wurzel, shame it didn't open it's wings fully. Lydlinch is ten minutes from Alners Gorse. Are the Marsh Frits at the Odstock site a release? I've wanted to visit Lydlinch for a while so made the most of being in Salisbury at the moment. It's a more traditio...

Thanks, Katrina, our timing was bang on and it was nice to see all those Grizzlies too. Cheers, Wurzel, I was beginning to wonder about Martin Down but your comment explains IT all :? We saw the grazing sheep, it looked a right mess! Yes Compton is a fabulous site especially with the badges on the r...

Re: May 2024

Yes, Wurzel, Marsh Frits show a good range of variation. The variation even between 'your' female, and 'ours' with its more muted colours is amazing.

Re: Maximus

Compton Down 20th May We were toying with the idea of visiting the Isle of Wight specifically to see the Glanville Fritillaries, but as we were due to house/dogs/cats/kids sit for our son, in Sussex for a week, we would be unable to fit in a visit to the Isle. But I remembered that Compton had rece...
