Hopefully, Jack's Peacocks will be tucked-up, full of nectar waiting to greet him in the spring again....
Over here, grey and damp. A few days ago, single RA, Sp Wood and Small White; been a good end of the season for the Small White, as they were visibly absent earlier.

Re: Box Brownie
For those who didn't use film cameras, just imagine how many rolls of film you would use on a shoot if you banged-away as you can with digital equipment! For that reason, you used to be very careful with each shot; not that, most of the time, you ended-up with in-focus and sharp pictures......most ...

Re: Bawsey Pits Norfolk
Jack My son has just moved to a job in local government as a Conservation Officer. He finds that there is NO budget for him to use, as it is all "outsourced" to contractors (who are ******** useless) as profit is their first concern, not conservation. He is expected to raise other funds th...

Re: August 2014
Carlisle 2nd - 4th August Indoors in guest house, two Tortoiseshells hibernating. Jack Yes - Majority of Small Tortoiseshell seem to have withdrawn into hibernation, though I have seen a few caterpillar webs in the last week. Our Recorder is going to look at what the data says about hibernation &qu...

Re: August 2014
Second broods are certainly providing the interest at the moment, now that Brown Hairstreak have emerged and Clouded Yellow made their appearance. More migrants to come? .

Re: June 2014
Nick That female Black Hairstreak is fabulous. She seems to be using a hind foot to help pull the thing out. Lovely stuff Nice to hear from you, Roger! It was a privilege to watch her. We saw 2 females that lead us a merry dance as they crawled through the blackthorn testing for the exact right pla...
Re: June 2014
Out yesterday with PhilB; a quick trip to Bedford Purleius revealed a couple of early Silver-washed, lots of Ringlet, Speckled Wood and Meadow Brown with a few Large Skipper and a fresh Comma. Later at Monk's Wood, our first 2 White Admiral, a couple of Red Admiral and Comma, a few Ringlet, Meadow B...
Re: June 2014

Re: June 2014
Met Jason at Monk's Wood with PhilB today; saw plenty - up in the bushes - but eventually were rewarded with a good photo opportunity; unfortunately Jason has gone by then....

Ah, good - you got a picture of the brown one! Norfolk Hawker goes down on the tick-list.....Rosalyn wrote: Bill (Willrow) would this be the rare and elusive Norfolk Hawker? Could this, along with the Swallowtail, ever tempt you to venture east?

Re: June 2014
Strumpshaw with Roasalyn and Phil yesterday; more photographers than butterflies flocking to the good doctor's garden! We went looking for Swallowtails elsewhere; 10+ seen. including this one on the field next door and a female on the Resrve. Lots of fresh Small Tortoiseshell, with Painted Lady, Pea...
Re: June 2014
Restricted to my local patch, I still can't get enough of female Common Blue (and I got a new toy - Nikkor 105mm macro - to play with)....

Re: gorganus or britannicus?
I'm not sure if there's ever been a confirmed sighting of britannicus outside of the Norfolk broads. But, I quote from the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership Scheme (http://www.cambsacre.org.uk/downloads/owlp_scheme_summary_mar_2014_140320080933.pdf ) "New fenland habitats are being created to ...

Re: gorganus or britannicus?
I think location will be the initial and primary indicator of whether a Swallowtail is gorganus or britannicus , and we'd have to see gorganus sightings coming from Norfolk before we'd need to take a closer look. Cheers, - Pete Last year we had reports of Swallowtail from Essex; id from photos was ...
