To all concerned
A recent discussion between myself and a member of this forum has culminated with the member slinging what I consider to be unwarranted insults. When told to 'grow up' his response was something that would be more suited to a school playground bully. With the exception of this one individual my memb...

Re: Help!!! want a dlsr...
A nicely balanced viewpoint there Dave. Amanda, you have already taken the first step by actually trying out one or two cameras so good for you. You found a preference despite both of the ones you handled being good photographic tools. Try a few more if you have the opportunity, go with the one you ...

Re: September 2009 entries
Thanks Pete. I would have preferred a larger size but I agree we have to accommodate as many UKB members as possible with a level playing field.

Re: Help!!! want a dlsr...
I would only add to the previous comments by saying having drawn up a short list based on your budget and features that you think you'll want, go down to your local camera dealer and play with as many of them as they'll let you have a go at. This is because the handling can be quite different betwe...

Re: The most amazing aberration ever ... !
There are three small copper aberrations in the main butterfly listings. How do these differ from the one posted in Learn-about-butterflies? Hi Eccles, If it's the 'white' ones that you're referring to, they don't; they're the same aberration: ab. schmidtii , in which the copper ground colour is re...

Re: Help!!! want a dlsr...
Sony  At least Nikon have street cred in the camera world. If your getting a DSLR at least buy from a camera firm, not a electronics giant, with tones of dosh, no pedigree and not prestige. Canon or Nikon camera manufactures, not telly's or Walkman's or play stations, Cameras. Gruditch ...

Re: Help!!! want a dlsr...
Get a Sony A200. Built in image stabilisation, decent kit lens, proper spot metering, screw or SSM AF driven lenses both work. You won't regret it.
You see? Everyone has their favourite so you have to try them out to find which you like best or you'll go round and round in circles.

Re: Photoshopping Advice Please
It depends on the camera, but with mine I have a set of colour options such as Standard, Vivid, Potrait, Landscape etc in the "Creative Styles" menu. The setting marked as 'Neutral' apparently applies nothing to the image, and gives the most accurate colour rendition, whereas all the other...

Re: Shooting hawk moths, any advice?
Insects sense motion only when a compound eyelet detects it, that is, their motion sense is quite coarse. Also their attention span is short, and this is why you can often get incredibly close provided you move slowly enough. In my days using the Fuji bridge camera I would regularly take shots using...

Re: Autumn/Winter 09-10 themed competition category's
Whatever for? We've had a summer full of them even if they're a bit thin on the ground now. Surely everyone who photographs butterflies has at least one decent PL shot. I agree with the others about dropping the Photoshop category since not everyone has extensive Photoshop skills, or even the produc...

Re: Not Lepidoptera (dragons!)
Hi, I will also post this in the general forums under TV shows. On Tuesday (08th September) at 7pm on BBC One _ "The One Show" will be a short film on Golden-ringed Dragonflies filmed in The New Forest this July. Should be worth watching. G I missed it but fortunately BBCi Player still ha...

Re: Not Lepidoptera (Birds) - 3
A very good site for red kite is Bwlch Nant yr Arian Centre in mid-Wales. It is a forestry commission owned lake and woodland, and the kites are fed near the lake. There are fewer kites than at Gigrin farm, and the way they fly down to take food means it's not that difficult to track them as they ap...

Thanks for the tip, Gary.
Meanwhile, two common darters were doing what common darters do. Snapped at my local nature reserve today using another 'wrong lens', a 200mm f2.8 prime with 2x teleconverter.

Re: Dealing with Japanese Knotweed?
Digging it up doesn't usually work because the roots go down really deep and you only need a little bit left for that to sprout again. Herbicides are effective but you're obviously restricted as to where you can use them. Seawater sprayed on the leaves work according to Wiki but that isn't much use ...

Stick a big pot on the patio and you'd be surprised what you can grow. At least I hope so, I'm still at the learning stage....
