Re: Scottish White-letters latest.
I managed to get my take on nomads the wrong way round yesterday after re - reading the comment! English wasn't my best subject at school :) Anyway back to Iain's post - Jill rang last night and told me the news as well. I asked them how many elms they had searched for the results achieved. Jill sai...

Re: Scottish White-letters latest.
I really don't consider White-letter Hairstreak to be nomads otherwise they wouldn't have survived the ravages of DED in the 70s. The only area where they seemed to disappear was in Cornwall where numbers/records were always low. My take on it is that DED spread into Cornwall, and whereas in other c...

Re: Eastern Region Purple Emperor report for 2014
We have thought of a lot of these things over recent years. Our thoughts with a camera were that we would be so busy looking at the screen and keeping the thing in control- we would probably miss any action (or be too distracted). An alternative was a remote controlled pigeon! The real thing has don...

Re: Eastern Region Purple Emperor report for 2014
Many thanks Jack - we have considered all these suggestions and been investigating but ............hopefully the costs will come down. I know of someone on the Norfolk sailing scene that has been filming the Broads from above for some years using these devices and had a long chat back in the autumn....

Re: Eastern Region Purple Emperor report for 2014
Now that Christmas is over, the shortest day is past and summer is only just around the corner (well in our dreams). We are hoping that everyone has had time to read our report! So Andrew and I would like to make a blatant plug (with Pete's permission) for financial support to continue our survey wo...

Re: Eastern Region Purple Emperor report for 2014
Its this sort of information that we always like to hear, those hearsay reports from yesteryear or not so yesteryear! The wonders of the Internet have made such a difference. Deep down in the appendix of our 2005-2006 report there is a Suffolk Atlas Extract - the last wood in Suffolk that we know of...

Thank you Dave for that. Very helpful ~ any negative information from the North Sea coastline would also be interesting if anyone has any contacts on birding forums?

Migrating species
Aware of much recent discussion regarding the dispersal of European species, which has been well documented on the forum I am looking for information......... Is there any data available of species being recorded at Lightships or Lighthouses. I note some reference in the Aurelian Legacy but not spec...

Re: Map sighting near Swanage
I so whole heartedly agree with Adrian's comment.............having had to contend with Purple Emperor releases in the East of England and listened to people claiming that our sightings are related............or they were extinct.............so they had to re-introduce them..............this is a pa...

Re: 2nd brood Swallowtails
My brother had a Swallowtail the other day at Horning church. Whilst sailing at Horning this last few days whilst I could allow my time to concentrate I didn't see anything although we did have a White Admiral in the garden which was a nice surprise

Re: Yellow-legged Tortoiseshell Invasion in the Netherlands!
I have just been alerted to the post within this topic of a Purple Emperor being seen in Norfolk. I appreciate that there has been an unfortunate release of butterflies in the county. Some points to answer - our first sightings were made by Andrew Middleton in central Hertfordshire in 1999 followed ...

Went there yesterday for the first time - would highly recommend to anyone.
Nice to just be able to look at butterflies for a change rather than be doing serious recording.

Yes 2nd brood are flying - seen flying across river at Horning whilst sailing every day last week except Thursday when it was raining. Not stopping though so might be hard to photo.
Nothing seen nectaring in brother's front garden.

Re: White Letter Hairstreak
Surrey is one of the harder areas - DED has really had its effect. If you want to see one perched - not grounded there is a roundabout on the A24 south of Dorking with about 5 planted SAGs - they should be flying around them this weekend. You will need to look through binoculars. Atlernatively there...
