A dreary day here in Sussex was brightened up by a Holly Blue roosting on the ivy opposite my kitchen window this morning, and as the weather didn't improve, stayed there all day. I've had a week in Cumbria with my Dad seeing lots of species I've never seen before. Mountain Ringlet at Honister Pass and Kidsty Pike, Large Heath at Meathop Moss, High Brown Fritillary at Barkbooth Lot and Arnside, and Northern Brown Argus at Arnside. Have a look at Dichrorampha alpinana, can be common around Oxeye Daisy.

Purple Emperor on the ground at Southwater Woods, Sussex today.
Took me by surprise. Wasn't settled for long, probing around in some damp mud, bit of wing missing already.

I think this may actually be Pyrausta purpuralis (Common Purple and Gold). The nice underwing shot you have, shows whitish markings. Have a look here: http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=1362
