Re: Pyrgus ID Required
Thanks for your input gentlemen. It is, as I thought, not possible to provide an accurate ID.

Re: Pyrgus ID Required
Hi David, Yes it was on the trip with yourself. I think the wayside meadows further up the road is most likely. Appreciate it is a difficult one to accurately ID. Having said that it suits my purposes exactly as I’m giving a presentation on butterflies to my local camera club (Cwmbran) and identific...

Re: Pyrgus ID Required
Hi Guy,
The image was taken on July 6th 2017 during a trip to the Col de la Cayolle although below the summit - i would guess the altitude to be in the region of 1500 metres. Hope this helps and apologies for not being able to pin down the altitude.

Pyrgus ID Required
Attached image was taken in the French Alps in 2017. A positive ID would be great if possible but appreciate it is a worn specimen (I'm leaning towards serratulae but probably way off the mark!).

For a number of years Green Down has been claiming, via published material, that it boats the most Large Blues anywhere in the world. A quote from its website "Green Down and the surrounding railway cutting has the highest density of large blue in the world". The fact that we have them wil...

Re: Additional or new lens?
Hi Phil and welcome to UKB. Those who love photographing butterflies, including myself, tend to fall into 2 camps when it comes to lenses used. Broadly it is either the prime macro lens (often a 100 or 105mm lens) or the telephoto (often a 100-400mm lens). Using the telephoto means you don't need to...

Satyr ID help
A couple of images taken in the French Alps, Rimplas area, back in 2017. I think they're both Great Sooty Satyr but the eye spots on the underwing in the one image confuses me. Help needed!

Larva Id
Whilst going through some old images I came across this one of a (I think) Glandon Blue. But what is intriguing is the little black larva on the flower head. Anyone any ideas?

I believe the image below is a Darwin's Heath but would be grateful for correction if required. Taken in the French Alps in 2017.

Re: November 2020
The air temperature can't have been more than 7c up there, Kev, so it's amazing that a Red Admiral decided to 'hilltop'! I guess the almost complete absence of wind must have been a factor. You're spot on about the absence of wind, Dave. Whilst at the Trig point we spoke to a guy who had unfurled a...

Re: November 2020
You're right Dave, the Peacocks were on the upper edge of the woodland. The RA was actually at the very top by the Trig point. A cracking day out!
