Re: Neil Freeman

Another week of mostly dull wet and surprisingly cold weather for the time of year here. A brief spell of sunshine later yesterday (Thursday) afternoon brought a single male Speckled Wood out and another one (or maybe the same one) appeared this afternoon in a similar late bit of sun. I put the moth...

Re: Neil Freeman

Cheers Wurzel. It is just a pity that Marshies cannot be found a bit closer for me. There is still much debate around whether they arrived at Prestbury under their own steam or whether they were yet another unauthorised release but prior to their appearance there my nearest site was at Strawberry Ba...

Re: Neil Freeman

Cheers Wurzel. I think that shot was with sports mode. I took a few with my usual aperture priority setting before I thought to turn the dial onto sports mode. As usual most of the shots turned out blurred with that one being the only one worth keeping. Saturday 25th May. Well, it was a good job I w...

Re: Neil Freeman

Cheers Dave. Yes, the Common Blues were the stars on Monday despite the Small Blues being the primary reason for our visit.

Thanks Ernie. From a dozen or so photos taken as they danced around in front of me, that was the only that was anywhere close to being usuable.

Cheers,

Neil.

Re: Bugboys mission

I read your note on Wurzel's pages about yourself also recently being a member of the GStreak In-Cop Club (GSICC) so I thought I'd check out your pages to see what photos you had taken of this very fine event. Same here. Well done Paul  :D That is a mighty fine looking Duchess too :mrgreen...

Re: Neil Freeman

Monday 20th May. Having seen that Small Blues had been flying for a while down at Bishops Hill we decided to have a run down there this morning (Monday). We left home at 09.15 under a thick overcast although the forecast indicated that the clouds should soon dissipate to give a warm and sunny day. ...

Re: Neil Freeman

At the end of November last year, I had a female December Moth to my garden moth trap that left me a few eggs. I overwintered these in the garage and they hatched in late March. The larvae of this species will feed on a number of deciduous shrubs and trees but I raised them on hawthorn which I have ...

Re: Neil Freeman

Thanks Trevor. Due to my limited opportunities these days I always like to plan to try and get the best return for my time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, luckily on that day it worked out nicely :D Garden Moths. I have not been running my garden moth trap that much this year, mostly due ...

Re: Neil Freeman

Saturday 18th May. A pleasant day, especially when the sun was out although we did lose it behind cloud for some extended periods this afternoon. A walk down to my local spot by Wagon Lane produced very little, just half a dozen Green-veined/Small Whites, a couple of Speckled Wood and a tatty femal...

Re: Bugboys mission

I have a sneaky suspicion that female Hairstreak may make another appearance in the favourites thread over the winter though, what a beauty. IMG_0125.JPG Yes indeed! I would say that is a certainty. What a lovely butterfly and like you say, the light shows it to its best  :D Cheers, Neil.

Jealous of your recent Pearls Trevor  :D I just about caught the start of them at Stansted Forest last week but in truth I was a few days too early for them there.

Very nice Green Hairstreak too  :D

Thanks Wurzel, t'was indeed a cracking day :D Thanks David. Yes, it all came together on the Wednesday :D I've not seen much since my return home last week. During our few days away, the warm weather after lots of previous rain, had led to a spurt of growth of everything in the garden so most of the...

Re: Small Copper Aberration?

What you have there Kev is a nice fresh female (top) and a male (bottom). Females tend to have finer markings than males and can often look like your example. For me it is within normal variation although I dare say someone will still put some obscure name to it.

Cheers,

Neil.

Re: Neil Freeman

Wednesday 8th May - Afternoon I forgot to mention in my previous report that I also saw my first Small Heath at Butser Hill. Whilst thinking about where to move on to next, I initially considered going to Old Winchester Hill but figured that I would be seeing the same species there that I had alrea...
