There are several records of this central European butterfly, which also known as the Violet Fritillary. Historical records include an individual taken in the early 1800s at Sutton Park, near Tamworth in Warwickshire by Mr. Richard Weaver, an insect dealer based in Birmingham. Another was taken near Maidenhead, Berkshire in 1857 and at Worcester Park in Surrey in 1872. Two specimens were taken near Tunbridge Wells in West Kent in 1876 and another near Christchurch in Hampshire in 1887. Another was caught on 16th May 1899 near Bentley Wood, Ipswich, East Suffolk and another in the Forest of Dean, West Gloucestershire in 1907. It is believed that all examples of this species are the result of introductions, either deliberate or accidental.

This species was first defined in Linnaeus (1767) as shown here (type locality: Austria).
