Butterfly Conservation is a registered charity with a national membership of 11,500. The Society is dedicated to the conservation of butterflies, moths and their habitats.

Google Earth Support

Google Earth allows you to navigate our planet, and many regions are mapped with high resolution images to the point that you can see cars and houses quite easily. Google Earth can be downloaded, for free, from http://earth.google.com/.

The UK Butterflies site data is now available in Google Earth format. This means that you'll be able to easily navigate around using Google Earth *AND* see butterfly sites on the map. See the screenshots below for expected results. Please be aware that there are some pre-requisites in terms of hardware, operating system and connection speed.

Instructions

To access the UK Butterflies site data from within Google Earth:

  • Download and install Google Earth using the link above.
  • Right-click and save the file below to your hard drive. *PLEASE NOTE* that the filename must be ukbutterflies.kml (notice the "KML" extension).
  • Either "double click" on the file (which will launch Google Earth and automatically import the file), or start Google Earth and select File->Open... to open the file

Here are some screenshots of what you should expect to see. This sequence shows the effect of "zooming in" to Arnside Knott, in Cumbria. Also note (as shown in the 3rd screenshot) that selecting a pushpin will list the speciality species found at this site.
