Chalkhill Blue

Hello,

8 July 2007
The first Chalkhill Blue Butterfly of the year was seen on the lower slopes
of Mill Hill on a cloudy day. It was one of twelve species seen in the
first hour.

As the sun came out so did the butterflies with 35 Chalkhill Blues on Mill Hill, Shoreham-by-Sea, all but one on the lower slopes, and the first brown female of 2007. Other notable butterflies included faded Ringlets on the south side of the Slonk Hill Cutting, Wall Browns on Mill Hill in the same place as three days earlier, a Clouded Yellow by the River Adur at Upper Beeding and a Small Copper visiting an Ox-eye Daisy on the Downs Link Cyclepath north of the A27 Flyover.
Sixteen (possibly 17) butterflies was the equal most in a day this year.

Hi Andy!

I saw your report on the Sussex BC site and this inspired me to visit Mill Hill on Saturday.

Beautiful site (though windy on top) and I saw Wall - just the three.

I noted some unusual (?) behaviour by one of these specimens and I may post on this under 'Species'.

Once the sun came out, the place was jumping with Chalkhills!

Hello Bryan,

It would be useful to have a report of what you saw on Saturday for the web page.

I usually go up on Sunday but family matters (my mother was ill and my sister was delayed by floods) interfered.

Okay, Andy.

0800-1000: Showers, sunny intervals: 1 Chalkhill and 30 Gatekeeper near vegetation on mid-slopes.

1000-1430: Mostly sunny: 100 Chalkhill (inc. two females); 80 Gatekeeper; 10 Meadow Brown; 3 Wall (well-spaced sightings); 2 Peacock; Comma; Red Admiral; Small White, all on lower slopes.

Shoreham Butterflies

23 July 2007
In the intermittent spells of sunshine, fourteen species of butterfly showed in Shoreham and the downs including a Small Blue on the Buckingham Cutting, a Brown Argus and 34 Chalkhill Blues on Mill Hill, Peacock Butterflies were frequently seen.

The Chalkhill Blues were counted with 32 in one acre. The numbers over the five acres of Horseshoe Vetch were probably about 100.

It was still some way from peak emergence for the Chalkhill Blues with 73 (72 males, 1 female) seen on the lower slopes of Mill Hill, Old Shoreham, Sussex.

A 112 Chalkhill Blue Butterflies were seen on Mill Hill and the immediate surrounding area, a figure that is about half total expected in an average year. Most were seen on the lower slopes. The brilliant blue of 11 fresh male Adonis Blues stood out from the paler blue of the Chalkhill Blues.

Delay because of a computer failure.
