Marbled White - Favourite Photo of 2015

Week 10

So continues sequence of posts giving one and all the opportunity to showcase their favourite shots of 2015!

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

Thanks Wurzel,

Hi Folks,
For this first Marbled White, I would like to thank Colin who kindly guided me in July this year through part of his territory in the Alpes Maritimes:

Then there was this individual in the Pre-alps, just north of Grasse, at 1400 meters altitude in July (thanks to RG) :

Saw more of this species than any other in 2015 - in the south of France, they're about in plague proportions!

Here's an English specimen though, taken at Daneway Banks in late June during a Large Blue hunt:

These are definitely creeping northwards year by year. Now many more sites appearing in Notts. albeit with small colonies. I photographed a mating pair at Bingham this year - just 4 miles from my house - whereas I used to have to travel 30 miles south into Leicestershire or Rutland to get a reliable sighting.

Male uppers and unders of the same individual and a female underwing in better light on a rare sunny day in July.

Took this picture late in the in the afternoon at Aldbury Nowers. Thesun disappeared and most the butterflies had decided to find somewhere to hide.

And this one was from my first sighting of them this year a few days earlier, looking a bit odd on the Privet at Box Hill.

I saw good numbers of these this summer, but took very few pics, this was one of the few, taken on 15th July.

I was very pleased to see this species continue to increase in numbers around my local patch this year where I took a number of photos but my favourite is probably the one below of a nice fresh example at Whitecross Green Wood.

2015 was the first year that I had evidence that Marbled White have bred in my new garden. I stopped mowing the grass in 2012 and saw the first Marbled White in 2013. I live in East Anglia and they have only recently become reasonably common locally. So my favorite photographs are the freshly emerged individual and the photographs of what I hope to enjoy for a few weeks every summer. All photographs were taken in the garden on 5 July.

Great to see Marbled Whites emerging in someone's garden.

As you say, merely leaving a small area to grow naturally can make a difference.

I particularly like this individual, taken at Denbies on 5th July. I somehow managed a blurry background, much beloved by others, but not usually something I achieve. And I haven't a clue how this happened.

There was also this (more typical!) example I liked from Box Hill on 24th June.

A day here on Burford Spur in late June or early July is a delight, with dozens of Marbled Whites and good numbers of DGF amongst them. Not to be missed.

Marbled White

This was my favourite Marb as it summed up exactly how I felt at the time. It was taken at the start of July when we had some cooler and damper than expected weather. I was working at close to breaking point experiencing the largest amount of stress that I have ever had and on one of my morning stop-offs here was this Marb. As I got in close I could almost sense its dejectedness, its tiredness and its disappointment, and there in the corner of its eye, is that a tear?
