Large White - Favourite Photo of 2013

Post by Vince Massimo »

Week 10.

Here is the opportunity to post your favourite photo(s) of a particular species taken in 2013 (or the last time you saw one!).

This is part of a series of topics which will grow over 20 weeks throughout the winter, eventually covering all 59 species which are regularly found in the British Isles. The intention is to showcase three species per week (in alphabetical order), so please wait until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos. Our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants.

Details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome and please feel free to contribute observations of behaviour, stories of personal encounters, anecdotes or other interesting points.

Large White

This was taken at work in mid May after rescuing the butterfly from the Sports Hall floor during our game of 5 aside. The previous week I’d rescued a male and this time it was a female which one of the year 11’s almost trod on.
As soon as the match had finished I raced back over to the lab with her delicately cupped in my hands and then released her. She was certainly brighter than the average butterfly as she flew to the bottom of the window and landed on the sill rather than bashing repeatedly into the window. This is my favourite shot as I like the asymmetrical reflection of her in the glass.

Always tricky to get an open wing Large White image. I guess this species is so large that opening them too much upsets the equilibrium when attempting to balance on a flower.

Still, I managed to capture this one during an opportune gusty moment, when the wind blew the wings open more than would otherwise be natural (spring brood female, taken on 4th May 2013 in Danygraig cemetery, Port Tennant, Swansea):

Despite the numbers of Large Whites about, I did not manage to capture an open wing shot, the closest being the photo below taken at Warton Crag during a brief stop off on the way back from a few days at Arnside.

I did however take a number of undersides that I like including this one in my garden...

It's been pointed out that my previous pic was actually a Small White, so I'll hold it back for later :)

I've been trying to get a decent shot of an egg-laying female for some time. This year, a cunningly positioned nasturtium in the garden finally did the trick :D

Hundreds of eggs were laid by many females, so I reared a few larvae, but all pupated too late in the season and so will not hatch until next May.

You can't go wrong with Large White pupae :D . They are a good size and come in a great variety of colours. The pale green version is definitely my favourite.

My Photo's were taken at three different times of the year in three different places also on different flower's.

The first one was taken on the 7th August in my back garden, the second one with partially opened wings was taken on the 21st May at Hall-Lee-Brook Westhoughton, and the third at Pilling on the coastal path 18th June.
They're interesting (for me ) because I took the one in May with my Bridge Camera and the other two with my new camera but with a different type's of len's. So they're all classed has my favourite's :D

The photo at Pilling was taken with my Cannon 1100 D, (len's came with it) and my third photo in my back garden with a new len's I purchased in August and was trying out for the first time " Sigma " 70-300M F4-5-6 DG Macro That leaves the one at HLB which was taken with my Bridge camera. :D

Being has I'm off for Christmas now to Kent I'd like to wish all UK Butterfly member's a very Happy Christmas and New Year
and thank everybody for their input through out this year to my posting's etc All the best Goldie :D
