Please include photo details

Post by Pete Eeles »

When possible/relevant - it would be useful if photographers could also include the following information in their posts including photos:

1/ Handheld or tripod
2/ Flash (yes / no)
3/ Aperture (F stop)
4/ Shutter speed
5/ ISO
6/ Anything else of interest (e.g. the mode you were using such as aperture priority, shutter priority, manual, auto, etc.)

Cheers,

- Pete

Hi Pete,
I'm not sure of the technicalities of code writing for a web site, but it aught to be possible to show the EXIF information that is embeded in most digital files. This would show all the details you are requesting as exif contains information as follows; File name, file date, Camera model, resolution, focal length, exposure time, ISO equivalent, metering mode, flash used Y or N, CCD width, aperture, white balance, exposure (AV, TV, Auto or Manual)
The picture sharing site that i use ( http://www.perfectlycaptured.com/ ) shows this information automaticaly unless the file is saved as "save for web" in which case the exif is lost. Normal "save as" will keep this exif information.
Hope this may be of some help to you.

Kind regards Vic.

Hi Vic, does this mean that the info is lost, if you run it through the sharpener, and save it, or adjust the contrast etc? Does it read the last application the file passes through?
Cheers,,, Zonda.

Hi Zonda,
Most image files will keep the exif information so long as you do a "save" or "save as" ( "save as" will also keep your original file unttouched because resaving jpeg files will result in a loss of information and deterioration of image quality which is why jpegs are knon as "lossy" files).
Post Processing such as adjustments to contrast, sharpness, etc should not effect the embeded exif information even if the file is cropped and reduced in resolution for uploading.
The reading of the embeded exif information would need to be done by the web site provider (or code writer) as the information would need to be extracted from the file using coding writen into the web site itself.

Hope this helps you Zonda

Kind regards Vic.

The good news is - I can show EXIF data on attachments pretty easily. The bad news is - that work needs to be done at the same time as I upgrade the forums generally, and replace the current photo gallery functionality. All in all, it's a couple of days work.

I've asked Gary (Gruditch) for a good time to do the upgrade, since the forums will be "down" for a day or two while I get this sorted.

Cheers,

- Pete

This is now implemented in the new gallery. Just click on the comments or rating for an image and the EXIF data is available (as an option). For an example:

http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/g ... 8#comments

I'll eventually get around to adding something to the main forum pages too.

I'm not sure about the technicalities your after Pete :?: If i put a photo in the competitions, date, time, etc, do i also put things like , taken in scene mode, then Close up mode :?: Thats what i usually take my pic's in. I suppose this is a tye of auto mode is it :?: I alter the brightness by hand when it's needed. I don't know a great deal about taking photos I usually enter what I like more than anything else.
I'm still learning
Can i also ask about the personal picture gallery. I don't go there with photo's very often until the end of the year really, but in May i have just noticed i was given a rating of 7 for a picture i put in then. I'd like to know why the photo was rated because i didn't know photos got rated like this in your personal gallery. It was a very nice supprise, i wished i'd seen it sooner. Also the comment that was made about it. Do you only rate the odd photo, or is it the person that makes the comment that gives it a rating :?: I'm still learning about things in UK B yet Goldie M :D

This request is simply for others to see what settings are used - so that if they like a photo, they can attempt to emulate it. I must admit, I'm guilty of not doing this myself. Part of the rationale is that most of this data is actually captured within the image file anyway and what we really need is a good way to expose that (the EXIF information).

Any photo in any gallery album can be rated and commented upon - and this can be done "at random". But someone might provide a rating and provide no comment, and vice-versa.

I post my pics on Flickr and the Excif info is all there if you view the pics individually. My camera also records the GPS information but I wouldnt recommend it as a good camera for photographing butterflies as it has no built in view finder. Most pics I take are in bright sunlight and those view screens are just a gimmick in such conditions. Its a Sony DXC HX 20V 18 million pixel model.
