Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2017

Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2017

Week 7 - Over a tenth of the way through; everyone has started talking about Christmas so it'll soon be Spring  :D

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

Another photo from a remarkable afternoon In Bucknell Wood, Northants, when I saw 20 different species - a major proportion of my entire year's collection!

This year the GVW's I saw were quite varied for Instance the photo I took in May at Hall-Lee-Brook on the 5th was of a very dark veined GVW,
Compared to the long shot I took of one in Fermyn Woods on July 14th, this one looked much Brighter.
I also took a photo in my Back Garden on the 30th of August, this GVW also was heavily Veined but not has heavy as the photo of the one I took in May, I suppose this happens and depends on the Spring and Summer species Goldie :D

A nice clear shot, Mike.
And indeed a dark-veined individual, Goldie.

My miserable contribution is almost the only sighting I had this year from the month of May in the South of France. I must say that GVW is not a common species on my stomping grounds. They seem to like a dampish environment and there's not an abundance of that down my way.

Plenty of these about for me this year and lots of pictures to sift through...
a female just about to take flight
Green-veined White female, Bookham Commons.JPG
and another one who luckily stayed in focus at lift off. They provided a welcome distraction whilst searching for the very elusive Large Tortoiseshell in the spring

This one posed nicely up in Chequered Skipper country

and finally a nice unmarked spring male

A much under-rated butterfly is the Green Veined White. I particularly like the late season individuals.

This one was photographed at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales on 17th September:

A really difficult choice. The spring and summer versions of the species are quite distinct, as are males and females, so you are looking at four different types straight off. Back on 2nd April, I watched a male and female encounter each other and couple in no time at all.

A few days later on 10th I found a dazzling white male.

After that, it was August before I photographed many others, by which time we were into the summer brood. A male from 17th August...

...and a female from 22nd show the more striking markings of the later brood.

I love the clean fresh whiteness of the first Green-veined Whites to appear in spring and they seemed to do well in my garden and around my local spots with good numbers showing up from early April.

Green-veined White

This was taken during one of the days out on my family holiday to Devon. We were having lunch in the Picnic area at the Otter Steam Train station prior to visiting the Otter Sanctuary. My niece was running around and hiding behind various small shrubs and playing with my daughters. Meanwhile I was mooching about with camera at hand. While I was photographing this beautifully fresh Green-veined White my niece came up to me, rested her elbow on my shoulder and stared at the butterfly. We stayed like that for a good while with her enjoying its beauty probably more than me. It will be a moment that I will treasure through the years and better still I have this shot to aid my memory of it.

Although this is not the best of Green-veined White photos, it is noteworthy to me as it was taken on 5th November 2017 at Southbourne Undercliff. This is the latest I have seen one, and it was nearly overlooked as a late Small White. A very pleasant surprise.
