Have we stopped having Spring and Summer competitions? Did I miss something?

No - but I did! Given some of the changes earlier this year, I missed the spring comp and felt that, rather than just have a summer comp, we may as well just have one annual competition this year. Details to follow :)

Also - there will be no calendar this year; Gary and Lisa (after many years of excellent support!) stood down from this task, and I haven't managed to find a replacement.

Cheers,

- Pete

It is with increasing trepidation (for my own modest chances), that I watch the often coruscating entries roll in for the annual photo competition. The standard is rising exponentially each year and I raise my hat to the judges, who are faced with the monumental task of sorting out the winners - bravo for them!
I hasten to add that this is written in genuine admiration for their efforts and in no way an attempt at a bit of pre-judging 'suck up'.   .

We only accept hard cash since we can't spend "admiration" :)

Congratulations to Nigel Kiteley and Iain Cowe, who took the first 3 places between them in the 2016 UK Butterflies Annual Photography Competition! With a superb photo of a mating pair of Esper's Marbled Whites, Nigel wins a copy of The Video Guide to the Butterflies of Britain and Ireland (DVD) which has been kindly donated by NatureGuides. All winning photos can be found here: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/competit ... ?year=2016

As ever, thanks for everyone who entered, this year being particularly difficult on the judging front!

Cheers,

- Pete

Congratulations Nigel. What a shot to win it! There were so many excellent to perfect photos that fired in towards the deadline that I thought my chances were fairly slim indeed. I am over the moon to get a second overall...unbelievable..even beating Nigels Apollo...even more unbelievable. Dave Collins Swallowtail is tremendous....how did that not win? hahaha.. and I really liked the Adonis Blue pair , Bill S. So many beauties among the entries.

Thank you Pete and all fellow judges for taking the time.

Iain.

Congratulations to those who put in the effort.

I have to say Jamie Burston's image was a real eye-opener for me. I had no idea WLH larvae could sport such a look.

Some absolutely stunning images on display here. You'd have to look very hard to find any better anywhere on the net.
Cheers Paul

A suggestion - now that the standard is so high, perhaps competitors could be required to enter a small 'portfolio' - say, 3 images - rather than just a single image.

Hi Mike - I'm not sure how this will help choose a winning image, which is what the competition is about.

You're probably right, Pete - I was thinking of something to challenge our photographers a bit more!
