Autumn/Winter 09-10 themed competition category's

Post by Gruditch »

Just so you all know what to look out for this season, in regards to the out of season themed competitions. Here is the list of the category's for 2009-10.

Oct - Immature stages
Nov - Up close and personal
Dec - Strictly Moths
Jan - Photoshop
Feb - Behaviour
Mar - More than one

All the category's, with the exception of Strictly Moths, has been used before, so if your new to the forum, just take a peek at the old comps, to see what sort of thing is required for each theme.

For all the category's this year, all entry's must be taken this season.

Have fun, Gruditch

Would it be supported if, in celebration of this wonderful Painted Lady year, and amazing summer spectacle we are about to have. I were to substitute the Behaviour category for a "2009 Painted Lady year" category. :?:

<soapbox>If we drop one category - I'd prefer it was "Photoshop" myself, since this is a photography competition :)</soapbox>

We might want to change "Strictly Moths" to "Not Butterflies" too :D

Cheers,

- Pete

Photo-shop was just a bit of fun, a chance muck about, and play with some of the bits of CS3, etc, that you don't usually use. Plus, Photo-shop got more entry's than Immature stages, Up close and personal, More than One, and Butterflies and people. So as I've already dropped Butterflies and people, it should be one of the others.

If you change Strictly Moths, to Not Butterflies, then it's not a Moth comp. I just wanted to bring a bit of attention, awareness, and appreciation to some of our wonderful British moths. :(

Not butterflies could turn into a complete free for all. I would rather it were moths too, or at least insects as there are some cracking dragonfly photographers on this forum.

Well, after the PL year that we've enjoyed, I think that almost everyone will have a few shots of them, so I support a months comp dedicated to them. :D
I think that Strictly Moths would be great, as even I have started looking at them.
The two lowest scoring comps last winter were Immature and Up Close and Personal which got 19 entries each. Pete would never drop the Immature as this is his passion.
I personally would like to see Photoshop go because I am a dunce at it, but I suppose that it will have to be Up Close and Personal. :(

Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

Yeah I like that idea since I have been moth trapping recently and now have over 500+ new moth photos I have taken, think at least one might be competiton standard

Because the general consensus was that the PL's don't have a return migration. I was kind of expecting to be inundated with the things about now, yay, photo opportunities just about everywhere. But as it turns out, they've gone, I haven't seen a PL in days.

So I think I'll shelf that one after all. :D

Whatever for? We've had a summer full of them even if they're a bit thin on the ground now. Surely everyone who photographs butterflies has at least one decent PL shot.
I agree with the others about dropping the Photoshop category since not everyone has extensive Photoshop skills, or even the product itself.

How about "Digital manipulation" instead? Most people can get access to some form of package (no doubt someone out there can advise on the correct links and free packages?) Those that have resisted so far or not had the motivation might explore them for this theme? Though, since these are for a bit of fun, any other category would do if not...

Hi Ethan, and welcome to UKB.

I'm afraid this competition closed twelve years ago - there is still an annual competition, but it is of a rather different format, and takes place just before Christmas.

However, I'd go ahead and post your photo in the "March 2022 Sightings" thread - I'm sure folk would like to see it! :)

Cheers,

Dave
