Meadow Brown ab ? Gate Keeper ab ? Goldie

Post by Goldie M »

I've been looking through my photos from last year and on entering my Meadow Brown photos in the favourites post noticed this one I took last year on the 3rd of July at Fleetwood, I was walking along the sea front behind the small sand dunes near the Marina Gardens when I spotted this Meadow Brown with the two spots on it's wing , I know they can vary quite a lot with their
markings so just wondered if there was a name for this one.?

Also on the 7th of August in my back Garden I got this shot of a Gate Keeper that seemed unusual at the time with so many spots on it's hind wings and a spot just below it's two spots on the wing, I couldn't get more shots because as quickly as it arrived it took off again. hence the slightly blurred shot. :D Goldie :D

This may be what you are looking for: Meadow Brown Maniola jurtina ssp. insularis
We get them here in Cornwall and are more common in the west of the county.

Hi Goldie,

The Gatekeeper is most likely ab. excessa (see http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/aberrati ... s=tithonus).

The Meadow Brown is possibly ab. biocellata (see http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/aberrati ... es=jurtina).

Cheers,

- Pete

Thank's any way Blackfish, :D

Thanks Pete, I didn't think the Gate Keeper was excssa , I was going off the six spots on it's outer wing rather than the extra spots on it's fore wing. :D
It's also good to put a name in my ab column for the Meadow Brown, it's my first MB ab (Thanks again,) Goldie :D
