Butterfly/Moth ID please

Postby mickbell197 » Sun Sep 03, 2017 8:30 am

Hi,

A friend of mine living in East Lothion, Scotland sent me this photo of a 'butterfly' he saw in his garden.
I do not recognise this as a British Butterfly so I'm guessing it may be a moth or something more exotic.
Could someone help with the ID please?

Many thanks
Mick

Hi Mick,
That looks like a Common Lime (Papilio demoleus). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papilio_demoleus
It is a tropical butterfly and probably escaped from a nearby butterfly house or local breeder.

Many thanks for the ID Vince.
Funnily enough I'm with my East Lothian-based friends at the minute and they think there's a butterfly house about 12 miles from their house in Longniddry so this would seem to fit the bill.
Many thanks
