Croatian Butterflies

Post by Stuart17 »

I saw these butterflies in Croatia along the coast at Pula in early October and assume they are common blue, holly blue and brown argus - strange to see "UK" butterflies in Croatia but am I correct?

Also is this a large copper?

Many thanks for any ID help

I think Common Blue is likely for your first image, Stuart. Holly Blue is your second and Brown Argus looks to be the nailed on candidate for your third.

Your Copper is a Small Copper rather than a Large Copper though.

Thanks for the ID help - I thought the small copper was something more unusual, it looked larger and brighter than UK small coppers, must be the Croatian sun!
It was odd to see "UK" butterflies in Croatia which also included small white, red admiral, clouded yellow, comma, wall and painted lady but I did see Langs short tailed blues and Bath whites to remind me that I was in fact on the Continent.
Thanks again
