Announcing UK Butterflies TV!

Post by Pete Eeles »

2017 will see the launch of UK Butterflies TV! Presented by Dr. Dan Danahar, this new initiative will highlight each of the species in the British Isles and contain interviews with experts and enthusiasts alike. If you have a particular story to tell regarding any of our species, and are willing to participate, then do contact Dan Danahar (Dan@BigNature.co.uk) or Pete Eeles (pete@ukbutterflies.co.uk) with details. The following video of Dan and Pete discussing this initiative provides some context.

Nice idea Pete :)

Filmed in the Eeles household library I see, I tend to avoid talking on video, as I sound very farmerish.

I wish! I think I could fit my house in the library at Juniper Hall!

UKBTV - a brilliant idea.

A thought at the outset. Can the videos be well indexed, so it is easy and quick to zoom in on the bit you want to see? One of the reasons I much prefer the written word and pictorial web pages to video material is that with the former you can skim and skip, whereas with most videos you are stuck with wading through in real time or risking missing the bit you want. That's great when you have time to indulge, but less great if you just want to check exactly what the circling seduction of the male silver-washed fritillary looks like or see how the flight of a long-tailed blue differs from that of a common blue. If each video had a comprehensive contents or menu it would greatly enhance its usefulness as a resource.

I really look forward to seeing this go ahead. Unfortunately, I won't be able to contribute very much UK material so I'll have to pass up on this chance to be a TV star.

Indeed - I've already passed this on to Dan. In short - yes! Good thinking!

We'll see about that :) Seriously, I think that your work with certain species (e.g. Purple Emperor and, especially, White Admiral) is worthy of note!

Dear Guy,

do you have an example of a video I could look at on youtube, that would give me an idea of what you mean?

Best

Hi Dan,

If you Google "how to link to a specific time in youtube" there are quite a few suggestions.

You can then paste the URL(s) into the video description so that folks can jump to a particular point. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znzXyDKsoYc

LOL. I did look for Wagner and various choral suites with URLs, but had no success :)

Sorry to be a pedant, but this is not, strictly speaking, a "TV channel", it's a VOD resource. Haven't had a chance to watch the whole top-linked video, but am I right in guessing this will be hosted on Youtube?

Pete,
Very inspiring ideas. Planning to do something with video this coming Spring Summer. Northern Brown Argus and Small Blue as the main protagonists for a film. I have always avoided it in general simply because of the extra work involved in editing especially. This short interview has pushed me a little further onwards.

Hi Jon - we never said it was a TV channel, just TV, in that it uses the medium of television transmission, as described here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television

Anyway, loads of organisations are using TV to mean just this in terms of video streaming, even hijacking the Tuvalu domain suffix (.tv) for this use, although I'm not sure we'll be registering ukbutterflies.tv!

Excellent - look forward to seeing what you come up with, Iain! You're also on our "hit list" of people that we'd like to interview, especially for NBA :)
