Re: Art Frames
And now pictures from the last, and rather glorious day; from meadows full of flowers. In the UK they would be designated as SSIs but this was normal and plentiful habitat. A few first time butterflies for me, plus some reminders of wonderful repeats from earlier. Firstly, a light looking Comma http...

Re: Art Frames
Thank you Wurzel and David, I have found it hard to finish this diary with some delays and website issues, but hopefully, this short burst will be the end. :D Firstly, as promised the Blue form the last entry. This is a lovely insect, a real surprise and had us all reading our field guides. A mounta...

Re: MikeOxon
Hi Mike I have made a number of visits to Bucknell this year, as it is close enough and is still a favourite for me. There seem to be fewer valensina than last year but it is still just the start of the season and the number of Silver-washed in other parts of the wood are very impressive so I hope t...

Re: Small Tortoiseshell ab - ID please
Thanks Mike. I started out looking for a name because it was such a lovely creature I will stop at this point finding out more which might lessen the feelings of delight and wonder. Unless I am corrected I shall go with ab.nigricaria which has similar groupings of forewing markings. That will be fin...

Re: Small Tortoiseshell ab - ID please
thanks again everyone. I have Ford and have skimmed through that section, thanks Jack. I have also just read Pete Eeles paper on Dispar. So I am feeling a little more informed ...and yet confused. I had assumed that variation was genetic and that the various vars were distinct and repeatable. With t...

Re: Small Tortoiseshell ab - ID please
Thank you Jack, Bugboy and Allan for taking a look and giving those helpful inputs. I had tried a number of online sources before asking but had reached no confident conclusion. British Butterfly Aberrations was my first point of call, and I was disappointed not to see something just like it. A frie...

Re: Wurzel
Never seen Marshies.   And the thought of seeing so many is very tempting. I tried to jolly a friend into taking a long trip this year but it failed. So I am going to plan it, probably a solo trip, next year. I know where to aim. :D I struggle to keep my own diary anythin...

Small Tortoiseshell ab - ID please
A lovely butterfly spotted at Fermyn Wood, Northants today. Would love to be able to put a name to it. I have tried to find a similar var to help with ID, but not had any luck. Any help welcomed. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1801/43177194441_956ff25e98_c.jpg (I have several other shots and an unde...

Sorry for the delay. I have been out taking rather than posting. But to continue Day 6 in Croatia (June 9th) transfer to Krasna. Goodbye to the Swallows who were in the process of fledging at the Hotel by the sea, before leaving for the Velabit mountains and a new Hotel. https://farm1.staticflickr.c...

I have been catching up with your Croatian diary, Art Frames - all your images are amazing but the one I keep going back to is the in-flight Clouded Yellow! One for Janet. A montage of a few of the rejection sequence. Mostly stopped in action...bigger on Flickr. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1773/...

Thanks to Janet and Wurzel for your comments. I will keep posting here but may also repeat the pictures in a relevant part of the forum as it may be of use for people thinking about Eastern Europe for a trip. What do you think? :?: So, Day 5 in Croatia (June 8th). On a walk amongst scrub and rocks o...

Day 4 in Croatia (June 7th). Our hotel is by the sea, with a mountain view behind. This is the Velebit mountain range, between the sea and the mountains is the Paklenica National Park. In our stay, the edge of that Park is our focus for a number of 'Balkan' and 'mountain' butterflies. https://farm2....

Great set of images, Peter. Particularly the in-flight Clouded Yellow. It's a great shame that they always keep their wings closed when at rest. Clouded Yellows can keep us going into November, here in Sussex. It's Tesco Tuna time !. Trevor. Yes, I agree especially when you need to make an ID of di...

Day 3 in Croatia (June 6th). Some time was spent at Villa Plitvicka Sedra in Irinovac to enjoy the sunshine and awakening butterflies before leaving for Starigrad-Paklenica. This Glanville was the more usual form. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1822/42850531451_5a360c2541_c.jpg We were seeing many, ...

So speeding up for David, I may get two done today :) Day 2 (June 5th) at Villa Plitvicka Sedra in Irinovac before breakfast. I woke up early, I always do on these trips and had a walk to find roosting butterflies as the sun started to touch the tips of the plants and grasses. A few day-flying moths...

Re: Bugboys mission
Lovely pictures which are really saturated in the overcast light. Just imagine how washed out the'd have been if it had been sunny. :D Wonderful shots, great message too. I spend far too much time looking at weather forecasts trying to guess which will be the right day. Just go and see. Yes, I will ...
