Re: Winter social 2023

Great to see a few familiar faces, and to meet a few new ones. Hopefully see you in the field next season 8)

Greek (Corfu) Skipper

Hi all

What are your thoughts on this Skipper from Corfu, taken on 28th July?

There are four possibilities as I understand: Grizzled, Oberthur's, Orbed Red Underwing and Sage. I thought at first it may be Oberthur's, but could it be a worn Sage Skipper?

Re: Overall Favourite Photo of 2020

This was a tough choice for me. Should it be the Geranium Bronze that turned up in Winchester and that I was lucky enough to see? One of the White-letter Hairstreaks that I was so delighted to see after having not seen them for nine years? The Clouded Yellow photo that I liked so much that if I neve...

Re: Wood White - Favourite Photo of 2020

After accidentally posting in the wrong (last year's) thread, here is my favourite Wood White photo from 2020. Taken at Chiddingfold Forest in Surrey, back in May.

Re: White-letter Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2020

This is a special one for me. Before 2020, the last White-letter Hairstreak I had seen was 9 long years ago, back when I lived in west London. I was determined to find them again last year and after several early morning visits to a local site where they can reliably be seen, I struck gold. Having s...

Re: Wood White - Favourite Photo 2019

I visited Chiddingfold in May and counted 27 Wood Whites between Botany Bay and Oaken Wood.

Re: White Admiral - Favourite Photo of 2020

I didn't see that many White Admirals in 2020, the most (and last of the year, for me) was one morning I met up with Pete at Pamber Forest to look for camilla eggs. It was hotter than the sun that day and we had called it a day by 11.30.

Re: Small White - Favourite Photo of 2020

I've opted for this Small White taken in a lavender field in Hampshire, in between lockdowns when we could travel a little bit.

Re: Small Tortoiseshell - Favourite Photo of 2020

Small Tortoiseshells were in pretty good numbers near me in Winchester. My early lockdown walks had plenty of sightings and the first and second broods were fairly numerous. I have opted for this photo as we will hopefully be seeing something similar in the coming weeks. :D IMG_9616.JPG I do however...

This is my first Small Skipper of the year, at Magdalen, on 8th June. I saw them through to 30th July.

Re: Small Heath - Favourite Photo of 2020

I saw hundreds of Small Heath in 2020, they seemed to be in good numbers wherever I went. I recorded 512 in total; the first on 26th April and the last on 13th September. I also had peak counts of over 40 at three different locations. Unsurprisingly, I have a few photos to choose from. I love the si...

Re: Small Copper - Favourite Photo of 2020

I struggled with the first brood of Small Copper. They were being seen, including some abs, just not by me! I finally found my first on 15th May. The second brood was equally scarce but by the third brood, numbers were better, although I still only saw 28 all year, including sightings in Kent, Dorse...

Re: Small Copper - Favourite Photo of 2020

The spotting on the fore wings was greatly reduced and the orange bar on the hind wing seemed quite thick with little spikes running up into the centre of the wing. Because of this at first glance it could almost have been a female Large Copper…but only from a glance and a funny angle  . The ...

Re: Small Blue - Favourite Photo of 2020

Magdalen Hill Down is a top site for Small Blue in Hampshire. They seemed to have a good year near me too. My first was on 7th May and my last on 4th August, both at Magdalen. I also saw them in Wiltshire, Dorset and at three other sites in Hampshire. The blue on these two males really stood out in ...

Re: Silver-studded Blue - Favourite Photo of 2020

In Hampshire, you either need to go to the heaths in the northeast of the county or The New Forest to see Silver-studded Blues.

I visited Broxhead Common a few times, near Bordon; a new site to me. Small Copper, Green Hairstreak and quite a few SSB.
