Re: Flight identification resources

Hi David, I'm sorry to say that there is no database, article or photo album on this website at present which is dedicated to identifying butterflies in flight. It's a tricky subject generally and I can't think of an easy way of depicting or describing that sort of information. We do have a "Fl...

Re: March 2024

I was surprised to see an early Speckled Wood in my Crawley garden between 11.45 and 12.00 today. IMG_2962-01G.JPG Swiftly moving on to Tilgate Park, there were 5 Red Admiral and 5 male Brimstone seen. IMG_2969-01G.JPG Back home our resident vixen was found enjoying the sunshine on the lawn. Re: Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2023

This one stands out for me because of the contrast in colours. It was taken on one of the transect routes at Gatwick Airport in July, where the species had a very good season.

Re: February 2024

Three Red Admirals on or around the Daphne bush in Tilgate Park, Crawley today between 12.30 and 1pm. Two looked very fresh, but not this one.

Re: February 2024

Today the sun came out just after 11.00 and I had a Red Admiral fluttering around the south-facing wall of my house at 11.20, so I took this as a sign to go back to the hot-spot in Tilgate Park. Upon arrival at 11.45 at the Daphne bush there were Red Admirals everywhere, and thankfully no people, so...

Re: February 2024

Thanks David. Unfortunately I was unable to get any photos of the large congregation of Red Admirals in Tilgate Park, because the spectacle also attracted a curious group of onlookers, who kept spooking the butterflies, so I moved on to the next site.

Re: February 2024

11 Red Admirals today. After a hazy start, the sun came out at midday and I saw the first one in the rear garden nectaring on Vibernum bodnantense. IMG_2834-01G.JPG By 12.30 I was over at the hot-spot in Tilgate Park, where there were 8 Red Admirals on or around the Daphne bush, either nectaring or ...

Re: February 2024

A Red Admiral was fluttering around the south-facing front wall of my house at 11.50 today. It was a sunny 9C at the time. This is also where I keep an un-sleeved potted nettle plant where I have three Red Admiral larvae that I am monitoring. They mostly hatched on 14th December and a 2nd instar lar...

Re: Swallowtail - Favourite Photo of 2023

The highlight of my year was a migrant continental Swallowtail that visited my Lancing seaside garden in July and laid two eggs on my fennel. Unfortunately one of them failed to hatch and the other produced a sickly larva which soon died. IMG_9211-01G.JPG IMG_9330-01G egg1.JPG Maybe next year? Vince

Re: Small Tortoiseshell - Favourite Photo of 2023

The Small Tortoiseshell had a truly terrible year here in Crawley, with only two seen on the two nearby Gatwick transect sites, plus one group of larvae.

However, the numbers were slightly better on the south coast at Lancing, but not by much.

Re: January 2024

Yesterday, 26th January...2 Red Admirals were suddenly flying around my head. As I watched them, my first butterflies of the year, they landed next to each other on the wall of the house, and proceeded to mate!! Well done Bob :D, this is an extraordinary image of an extraordinarily adaptable specie...

Re: January 2024

Excellent, Vince. :) That site sure is productive for you. Thanks David, I stumbled across that spot a few years ago and it usually gives me my first sighting of the year if conditions are right. I would also draw everyone's attention to the superb list of sighting on the Sussex BC website today: h...

Re: January 2024

A hopeful visit to my winter Red Admiral hot-spot in Tilgate Park, Crawley produced one butterfly at 12.05, nectaring on Daphne. The sun had been shining all morning and the temperature was around 9.5C at the time of the sighting.

Re: January 2024

Today a Red Admiral egg hatched at my winter study site at Ifield Meadows, Crawley. It was found coloured-up and ready to hatch on 5th January and the larva started to chew through part of the top of the egg on the 7th. This activity stopped due to colder weather and the egg shell remained partially...

Just one shot of this species last year and quite lucky that it came out, considering that I had to hold the camera above my head. It was taken on one of the Gatwick transects.
