Re: Gatekeeper/Meadow Brown Aberration??

Ha - thanks - Glad to give you an easy one! I suspected it was too - but is it normal for the patches to be cream rather than orange? The only orange colouration was behind the head on the forewings, and their was a lack of spots on the hind wings?

Gatekeeper/Meadow Brown Aberration??

Just back off holiday from North Norfolk. Whilst enjoying the large number of butterflies and moths fluttering over the cliffs at West Runton (loads of Essex Skippers, Gatekeepers, a few MB's, the usual Whites and lots of 6 Spot Burnets) I came across 2 or 3 of these. At first I thought they were Ga...

Holly Blue on Cotoneaster?

Hi. I've seen some of the largest numbers of Holly Blues flying through my garden that I have ever seen. I have a lot of Ivy (Caneriensis var) plus the wild species growing through old Hawthorns so I usually see a few each year. This past month I've seen literally dozens. On Sunday I watched 2 male ...

Re: Archiving digital image files

Thanks for this. I noted hard disks are getting much cheaper so i think I will go this direction. Incidentally I have a Western Digital 500Gb external for back ups at the mo. My PC is on the landing and one of my kids managed to knock the drive off the back of the desk, throuh the banisters and it b...

Re: November Sightings

Good depth of field. Did you use photo stacking? Nothing so fancy - just borrowed my sons fuji finepix f40fd - as its a basic compact, the DoF is pretty good. In fact I am jealous that he get's better butterfly pics than I do with a Canon 400D / Sigma 150mm! Having said that - I have never looked in...

Re: November Sightings

OK - my first post in months, but I figured amongst the snow and ice there was little to see. Whilst friends in Yorkshire were producing stunning scupltures of people out of mounds of deep snow, down here in Cambridgeshire I thought I'd see what I could do with our meagre dusting of snow... So here ...

Re: Archiving digital image files

I'm already backing up onto an external 500Gb drive (soon to be replaced with a 2 Tb RAID WD External Drive), but what I want to use are the 'Archive' grade DVDs that are meant to last decades and which I can keep at work for added security. 25,000 images (mainly of my kids, family and friends but i...

Archiving digital image files

Until now, I have backed my files up onto a portable hard drive and DVD-Rs. However, I am aware that DVDs degrade with time - often more quickly than one might imagine. Does anyone here have any experience of using archival grade (gold I think) DVDs and can you make any recommendations? I've Googled...

Re: July Sightings

T Whatever is going on, as a Norfolk native would say: “Tha’s a roight rummin tha’ is!” (We might speak funny, but we know about apostrophes). PS. I always wonder if Admiral Nelson – Norfolk’s most famous son (after Jack Harrison of course) -said that when enemy cannonballs hit his ship? Jack As a ...

Re: July Sightings

I'm a very happy chappy having seen my first ever Purple Emporers yesterday, plus good numbers of White Admirals which I'd only ever seen briefly once before at Brampton Woods. Also, the kids loved walking along the grass paths where 'clouds' of grass loving butterflies - Ringlets, Meadow Brown, Sma...

Re: Anaglyphs

Nice idea - as long as you have perfect vision in both eyes. I recall going to Alton Towers as a kid and putting on those 3D specs to watch a 3D film - I couldnt see a thing as I have a lazy eye/squint. I wasn't sure if the new technology and use of polarised glasses for 3D meant Id be able to see t...

Re: New Canon Camera

As an Ex Skoda (Felicia) owner I can only say you can't really compare it to a BMW - especially as I survived a 60 mph crash (no airbags) into another car in it. Yes I was quite badly injured - but we survived due to the Skoda design. So I guess, using that analogy above, explains why I too went for...

Re: Image Storage Problems

Some very sensible advice above. Discipline is key. I copy files to a dedicated photo hardrive in my PC, back up monthly to a separate external 500Gb Western Digital drice. Once every few months I aim to transfer files to DVD-R (not RW so no risk of accidentally deleting). My precious files are dupl...

Hi Dave I am currently using a PC and use Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6. Its not the easiest to use at first, but now Ive got to grips with it I am much happier. There are lots of 'Show Me How' guides embedded in the software to get you started, plus sonycreativesoftware has a forum with lots o...

Timelapse/speed up video

Hi Just wondered if anyone ever tried doing any timelapse video of british butterflies and moths to show their life cycle. I had a go videoing some Privet Hawkmoth ova hatching - and this can be seen via the 'Lepidoptera (Not butterflies)' forum (http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f...

Re: Lepidoptera [ not Butterflies ]

Thanks for this too - it's one of the moths I uploaded to on an earlier page (2) that Id not been able to identify. Once again, it's becuase it's a micro that I struggled to find it. I never understand how some relatively large moths get classified as micros still. For example the Small Magpie was v...
