Re: Overseas butterfly tours

This thread is now unlocked - Paul and Roger - I'm unable to restore your original posts but feel free to post again. The issue, Roger, is what happened after your post with another member making claims against a certain tour company. Anyway, without going into details, they are now banned. So pleas...

Re: Overseas butterfly tours

Since this thread has descended into a love-fest for different tour providers, I’m locking it. Sorry, Ian, but I don’t think you’ll get a sensible answer to your question here when most of the guides for the different companies are UKB members!

1. Release.
2. Assisted travel.
3. A vagrant (a stray, wandering individual).

None of these mean that the BVW migrates.

Re: Vagrant - Favourite Photo of 2023

I completely agree, Paul. Being objective and taking into account the facts and the species’ ecology, then the only conclusion I can come to is that the original sightings are of a release. I’m surprised anyone can possibly think anything else to be honest! How does a non-migratory butterfly end up ...

2024 - Large Tortoiseshell

It's that time of year to start the usual LT thread! We often get asked by 'the great and the good' to let them know what's been posted on UKB before the formal records are collated at the end of the year, and there's also a lot going on in the broader ecosystem (Twitter, Facebook etc.) that also wa...

Re: Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary - Favourite Photo of 2023

Well… I have had responses from two of the local experts and both opined unequivocally that it is a female selene . The question was framed in an open way (i.e. not “do you agree that…”) and neither offered the possibility that it might be dia , which I did ask. Thanks Roger - did they say why they...

Thanks both! It was also nice to get positive feedback while at the AES Exhibition yesterday. Seems the effort was worthwhile, which you never really know until a book is published and get feedback!

Re: British & Irish Butterfly Rarities

Thanks chaps! Yes, the amount of research was quite extensive, because it had to be. Even when I was done I was sure that there must be other records lurking - on data labels, for example. It reminded me of this episode of Blackadder (the dictionary episode): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOSYiT2i...

My copy arrived today. What a lovely start to the day! - Fab 'companion' to "LIFE CYCLES..." - Scholarly - as the author puts it, 'an archaeological dig' - Really appreciate the sections (Primary, Adventive, Questionable, and Future) - Beautiful (largely thanks to our six-legged friends t...
