Re: Annual 2017 Competition

Way back, we used to run monthly competitions, but during the off season ( October- March) we ran themed competitions. Before we come up with some potentially great new categories, only to find we receive just a couple of entries. It could be worth the time trawling through them, to see what catego...

Re: Annual 2017 Competition

It would also help if decent image sizes can be handled in the comp. For my shots, I got really close (28mm wide angle at antennae prodding distance!) and it is a shame to capture all the scale detail and then lose it in image size reduction. This hasn't been an issue to date. At the end of the day...

Re: Annual 2017 Competition

The exif data doesn't seem to be available now that the competition has ended Not sure where you're looking, but if you go to the competition albums, then all of the EXIF data is there (just click on an image to go to the appropriate page, and you'll see it). Apologies - I missed this post! Cheers,...

No, it doesn't, and I agree that it could be useful for others to see.

Re: Annual 2017 Competition

How many have been taken with compact or bridge, not many. In the right hands, you can get images like those that win from a bridge camera with a close up lens. But it has to be in the right hands. Indeed (again!). Neil Hulme, Mark Colvin and others are using relatively-cheap equipment, and produce...

Re: Annual 2017 Competition

So a rubbish photographer with a £300 DSLR, will still be a rubbish photographer £5000 DSLR. Very very true! In terms of "spicing things up" I was simply thinking about different categories than the norm - such as "butterflies in their landscape" or "butterflies in flight&q...

Hi Chris - understood. Will have a think and try and come up with a proposal early next year, before things kick off.

Thanks Wurzel!

I'm not sure what that critter to the right of the egg is. It was crawling around, and didn't emerge from the egg. Nature is just brilliant - always so much to learn!

Re: Annual 2017 Competition

Well done to all the winners. Any comments from the judges on the also-rans? :?: Hi Ian, Not specifically, but some general observations: 1. Focus on composition, as well as the technicalities (in focus etc.). 2. Remember that the final image is as much art as science. The blend of colours, for exa...

Re: Pete Eeles

Thanks David / James / Katrina - and apologies for not acknowledging your replies sooner! My PD is getting rather dusty but, as ever, there's always a lot going on behind the scenes (mainly writing a book!). Anyway, I managed to get to Pamber Forest today and found 6 Purple Hairstreak ova on a favou...

Re: Website file limit

Will look into it!

Thanks for the thoughts, David - the problem is that 90% of the files are in personal diaries and I feel that focusing on other areas would be "dancing around the edges"!

Re: Website file limit

Do you have any plans to convert any other years into PDFs? Hi Neil, I've written a simple mechanism that supports a yearly summary of a PD for any member. I've not made it generally available since it isn't optimised and causes a performance problem when too many members try and use it at the same...

Re: Red Admiral overwintering 2017-2018

Some photos from today :) It does make me wonder what the white spots that develop on a 1st instar larva represent, since there are no white markings on the 2nd instar larva (at least, initially). And so - that particular 1st instar larva has moulted into a 2nd instar larva that DOES have white mar...

Website file limit

Hi all, I was reminded during the UKB social event to take another look at just how close UKB is to the hard limit of 300,000 files imposed by the service provider (and which is, I believe, a software limit). I thought we had at least another year to go before having to take action, but found that w...
