Re: Neil Freeman

Seeing your beautiful Hawk Moth images reminded me of an image I took in the French Pyrenees . One night our tour leader set up a Moth trap at our hotel. In the morning this huge Privet Hawk Moth was found in the trap. I placed a £1 coin near the Moth to give a sense of scale. Unfortunately the only...

Re: Andrew555

Some great images recently Andrew.
But for sheer luck / skill, right place / right time, that Kestrel shot has to take first place
I managed a passable shot of one perched, but an action shot like yours is beyond me or my camera !.

Great stuff,
Trevor.

I should have said that Dave. That's what I was thinking when I posted.
Hopefully there will be some exciting moments before late June, early July !.

Re: Wurzel

At least, around here, the season still has a while to go after mid September, but of course the best is over ( apart from some fresh Cloudies ! ). :D Your Large White is for me the pick of the bunch, in perfect condition and displaying well. Is it just me, or do the final flush of Large Whites look...

Re: Trevor

Many thanks Dave, Wurzel and David M. The work carried out over this winter, with both the contractors and their machines, and volunteers, have transformed the whole area. New wide rides and inroads into some of the Birch scrub should provide a suitable environment for the growth of Dog Violets lead...

Re: Trevor

This morning a party of three, lead by Neil Hulme, descended on Park Corner Heath for a tree felling session, in what can only be described as perfect weather for January. The sky was blue, the sun shone and it was mild with no breeze. Work was concentrated near the visitors hut, with Neil and his c...

Happy new year to you too Goldie.
Glad you liked the storm images, I could hardly stand up, and my ears hurt with the cold wind !.

Re: Trevor

Today's gale promised some spectacular seas. The following images were taken at Tide Mills, looking towards Newhaven harbour arm. Is there a Butterfly connection ?, well yes, at a more favourable time of year Clouded Yellows fly exactly where I was standing !. Incidentally all images were taken in c...

Re: Wurzel

HI Wurzel, With so little Butterfly activity at this time of year, I have not browsed these diaries seriously for a while. So I only discovered the report on your expedition to St. Peter's church this morning. I am delighted the visit was worthwhile and you went home with some great shots. We will h...

A beautiful Summer selection, Neil. I don't think it's possible to obtain
a better High Brown Fritillary image than yours. Superb stuff !.

Wishing you a fruitful, happy 2018.

I imagine your next challenge will be an image of both sexes of each species.
That'll keep you going for a bit longer !.

Re: Trevor

Today I saw a festive, end of year Small Tortoiseshell !. It was on a bedroom carpet at the Bell Inn. I first thought it was dead, but as I picked it up it fluttered back to the carpet. My Daughter said she often finds one or two Butterflies upstairs in the pub. Being an old building ( 1740 ) I imag...

A rare encounter indeed !. One of those right place, right time occasions.
I have only seen an Emperor Moth once, drying it's wings on a wall at work,
about ten years ago.

Once again, have a great Christmas. :D .

Wishing everyone on UKB a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a year full of Butterflies in 2018.

The shortest day today, so at least the hours of daylight improve from now on :) :D .

Best wishes to all,

Re: Trevor

Among the images obtained in the French Pyrenees, was my best, to date, image of a Dark Green Fritillary underside. This one was taking minerals from damp, ground up rock. A few days earlier I managed a closed wing shot of first ever Niobe Fritillary. This was found very near to the Scarce Coppers I...

Those ' blue ' female Adonis Blue shots caused me to drool a little !. Don't forget the Tilshead site next year, a superb Adonis site. Go to the end of the Village, and by the filling station the A360 turns sharp right, go straight on, after half a mile or so, on your right you will see several conc...
