Re: June 2023

Hi ZZ_W ,

Your mystery butterfly seems to have a dark background and white stripes .

Together with your description of flight , my guess would be a day flying Jersey Tiger moth .

Re: July 2022

Visited Chiddingfold with fellow enthusiast Keith on Friday , in search of Purple Emperor . After 3+ hours searching , one ' possible ' , one 'probable ' and one ' positive ' , in the Sallows just before the Botany Bay entrance , and that was high up , was all that we found . Good numbers of SWF and...

Re: May 2022

A short visit to look for Adonis Blue at Biggin Hill failed to find a single one . But it did produce 14 species , albeit in small numbers . On my way back to the car , a flash of pink landing on Wayfarer flowers turned out to be my second Painted Lady of the year . _MG_8742.JPG _MG_8738.JPG Leaving...

Re: Brown Hairstreak back in Kent

Well , it was another up and down year for the Brown Hairstreak spread back into Kent . Following the destruction of the vegetation on the Jackass Lane bridleway , and the unusual weather during the flight period , I only know of 4 sighting along it's length , but there were sightings along the Nash...

Re: November 2021

Blue sky and warm sunshine drew me to a look around Hayes Common this morning . Just before 11 o'clock , I stopped to pay my respects , and almost immediately was joined by a male Brimstone , charging around to begin with , then settling on a gorse stem just a few feet away from me . Re: June 2021

Spent a couple of hours at Lullingstone Country Park near Eynesford before the heat of the day got unbarable for both butterflies and searcher this morning . Small Heath , Meadow Brown and Common Blue were the main species seen , until I put up my first of 5+ Marbled Whites of the year . _MG_6646.JP...

Re: Observations

Would agree with your ' Silver Y ? ' identification . The ' great number of orchids seen ' is Common Spotted Orchid . Help needed , I believe is the Southern Marsh Orchid . Long-legged Spider is the Nursery Web Spider / Pisaura mirabilis . Your first Black-tailed Skimmer could have been a female , b...

Re: Janet Turnbull

I believe your beetle might be the longhorn beetle Stenurella melanura and your lichen is Cladonia cristatella , commonly called British Soldier , as it's red fruiting bodies ressemble the ' red coats ' of the British soldiers in times past .
Sorry unable to help with your moth .

Re: Brown Hairstreak back in Kent

Well , a decision was made , and the 45 BH eggs from the destruction of the Jackass Lane bridleway were wired into a favourable stand of blackthorn at Jubilee Country Park , Petts Wood , in the London Borough of Bromley last Monday . I waited till the schools went back , hoping that fewer people wou...

Re: March 2021

A female Brimstone seen yesterday in a garden in Beckenham , Kent . Nothing unusual about that , but although it was in bright sunshine , the wind was cold and the ground was covered with hail , deposited a few minutes earlier . Can only think the hailstorm disturbed her from hibernation , and after...

Re: Brown Hairstreak back in Kent

The weekend after finding the destruction at the bridleway , Keith and myself met there to see if anything could be salvaged from the situation . Searching the detritis on the ground and the few blackthorn plants that survived the flail , we found 45 BH eggs . The few that were not in danger of dama...

Re: Brown Hairstreak back in Kent

On Wednesday 11th.November , I spent another 3 hours on the Jackass Lane bridleway , removing probably hundreds more Ash seedling from the entire lenght and also checking to see if leaf fall on the blackthorn was complete , enabling an egg count to take place in the near future . On Friday 13th. we ...
