Re: Reverdin

Various combinations of all three whites, Comma, Peacock, Red Admiral and the occasional Painted Lady, plentiful Speckled Woods, and singleton Common Blue, Brimstone and Small Copper still around the garden on warmer days over the past couple of weeks.... and this rather tired visitor today, we don'...

Common, Chapman's or Eros....

This could be tricky, but this was up at 1960m near Bormio in Northern Italy. No upperside view, and not much forewing to go by, but I hope for some advice please....

Re: Reverdin

Thanks Guy.... I actually don't think I would have if not for you. In my mind's eye, I had a completely different idea of habitat, but you gave me all the clues to get me there! The lush, if small, patch of very long grass where they were present would have otherwise passed me completely by. ( as wo...

Re: Identity parade!

Ok, now having seen Guy's observations in his own diary, I now think I have ONE picture here of Warren's. I would be very grateful for anyone interjecting on this soliloquy, although I think this must be the most difficult of differentiations without being in the field to see them, so understand the...

Re: Reverdin

I look forward to your further thoughts as to marks out of 7 for warrenensis !.. my cassioides could be tyndarus as I was mainly going on the size of the forewing ups eye spots.. I am not a reliable judge on such matters.... however, as far as food goes I obviously have massive experience, , ...

Re: Identity parade!

Checking against Matt Rowling's page on warrenensis, I believe now all except one of the above are that species. I think No 4 is cacaliae. Please put me right if anyone can though :D

Re: tyndarus or perhaps nivalis????

Thanks Tony, it truly was highly coloured, especially on close photo inspection, superb diffractions. Guy, indeed, you are THE authority for most people on UKB ( I'm sure most would agree), along with Roger G and a couple of other less frequent commentators. I am extremely thankful that you qualify ...

Re: Reverdin

Hi Goldie, sorry I didn't reply, I have been indulging myself in Italy. Northern Brown Argus are quite local but not uncommon on my side of the Pennines, but the best ones are undoubtedly the white spotted Scottish variety, which it would be worth travelling a little further north and west to see, i...

Identity parade!

These were all taken at Stelvio Pass where warrenensis is said to fly at this time of year. I believe the majority of these are cacaliae but I do think there is at least one warrenensis among them. I have no underside shots as it was a very hot day, and they weren't at all obliging. They were all sm...

tyndarus or perhaps nivalis????

Yesterday was good. These shots of different individuals were taken at approx. 2500m in the Stelvio region of Italy. I assumed and I'm sure they are tyndarus , but you know how it is, the books have made me consider nivalis I have never seen it, but the bluish hindwings of the fresh one were remarka...

Wow, there's lots of good stuff going on out there isn't there. Some great looking places for future meadows and butterfly havens. Jack, if you PM me your address, I could reciprocate your Sanfoin with an envelope of Yellow Rattle.... just chuck it where you want it to grow and watch it go the next ...
