Sallows in flower!
by Pete Eeles on Sat Feb 24, 2007 8:13 pm
Wandering around the countryside, there is much activity on the flora front. In particular, as well as many Blackthorn stands being in flower (foodplant for Black and Brown Hairstreak), both male and female Goat Willow (Salix caprea) plants are in flower - the primary foodplant of the Purple Emperor. Dwarf varieties of Salix caprea (usually labelled as "Kilmarnock" - which has a "weeping willow" effect by grafting stems onto a vertical stem) are also available in most garden centres right now, whilst they're at their most spectacular!
