2010 Photography Workshop - Saturday 24th April 2010, Longstock, Hampshire

2010 sees the return of the UK Butterflies photography workshop, in association with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branch of Butterfly Conservation. The purpose of the workshop is to gather together members of the UK Butterflies community to share their photographic experiences, with an emphasis on Lepidoptera.

Logistics

The event will be run at Longstock, near Stockbridge in Hampshire (close to some excellent downland), on Saturday April 24th 2010, 10am to 5pm. There will be a charge of £10 per attendee, payable on the day, to cover the cost of the hall and any other costs incurred in running the event. The increase on last year is to cover the cost of the hall which is more-expensive than the one used last year. All profits will be donated directly to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branch of Butterfly Conservation. Please bring your own lunch - although coffee and tea will be available in the hall. Detailed directions etc. will be provided in due course.

Agenda

Please note that the workshop content is still under discussion, but a provisional agenda is given here. This will be a day of presentations, mixed in with some practical work.

  • 0930 - 1000 Arrive, coffee/tea, mingling
  • 1000 - 1010 Introduction
  • 1010 - 1040 Presentation 1 - Basic concepts

  • 1600 - 1615 Coffee/tea
  • 1615 - 1700 Show and tell (critique session)
  • 1700 Wrap up

In terms of content, we anticipate coverage of, at a minimum, the following:

  • Photography basics (parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, depth of field etc., different types of camera etc.)
  • Tradeoffs (film v digital, tripod v handheld, flash v natural light etc.)
  • Macro photography (challenges specific to macro photography, the different types of equipment to use etc.)
  • Digital photography (my assumption here is that most attendees will be using digital) including a discussion of the different types of digital camera, setting up the camera, RAW v JPEG, the "digital darkroom" [post-processing] including image manipulation
  • Composition
