Gallery Guidelines

This page contains guidance on posting images in the Photo Gallery.

Monthly Photo Competitions

In addition to an annual photography competition, UK Butterflies also holds a monthly photography competition, using the gallery mechanism, where members may enter a single photo. New monthly competitions are announced in the Competitions forum and you must be a registered member of the forums before you can enter a competition. The competition dates follow the following pattern, where the January 2009 competition is used as an example.

• Entrants may enter the competition after the 1st January. To enter the competition, upload a single photo into the January 2009 sub-album.
• The competition is closed for entries from midnight on 4th February (in order to allow photos taken at the end of January to be submitted).
• Voting starts on the 5th February. As of September 2009, voting is conducted using the rating mechanism that is part of the gallery mechanism. To vote, simply click on the rating associated with any photo you would like to vote for and give it between 1 and 10 points.
• Voting closes at midnight on the 19th February.
• Winners are announced on the 20th February. The winning photo is deemed to be the one with the most points.

Species-Specific Albums

All registered forum members are welcome to post their images in the species-specific albums. Over time, it is anticipated that these albums will provide the most extensive image library of butterflies of the British Isles anywhere on the web! Moderators are able to tag these images to indicate if they should be shown, by default, on the main species pages.

Conventions

Posted images are most useful when they contain information regarding location and date. This information is most easily included in the image name and it would be appreciated if contributors would follow this approach.

Policies

Members should be aware of the following policies:

• There is a minimum standard for images appearing in these albums. Before posting, take a look at images already included and ensure that your images are at least of the same standard, if not better. If you're not sure if your images are of sufficient quality, then please contact one of the moderators (and send a sample). An exception is where the image shows something not already shown (such as an aberration, or unusual behaviour). This policy is in place to maintain a sufficient level of quality.
• When posting, please focus on images that will add something to the images already available. For example, it might be a butterfly photographed from a different angle, or behaviour not already shown.
• Please post images in the correct album. The species-specific album contains a sub-album per species. Species albums contain a sub-album per stage (imago, ovum, larva and pupa). Sub-albums are also provided for subspecies, forms and aberrations. There are also sub-albums for specific aberrations.
• If you are unsure of the subspecies then please post your image in the "Imago" folder for that species and one of the moderators will move it into the correct sub-album.
• If you are unsure of an aberration then please post your image in the "Imago (aberrations)" folder for that species and one of the moderators will move it into the correct sub-album.
• Images taken outside of the British Isles will be accepted, but normally only for rare migrants since we prefer images taken in the British Isles where possible.
• Images of captive-bred individuals will be accepted although, given two images of equal standard, the image taken in the wild will take precedence.
• When posting images of captive-bred individuals please be certain that, if relevant, it is of the same subspecies as one found in the British Isles.
• Images of a subspecies not found in the British Isles will be accepted, but normally only when there are very few images of the correct subspecies currently available. This applies, in particular, to extremely rare migrants or accidental introductions, such as the Julia. In this case, please post images directly in the "Imago" album for that species.
• Natural-looking images are preferred. For example, we discourage images of butterflies taken on fingers (unless showing particular behaviour such as a Purple Emperor feeding on sweat).
• Images that do not meet the criteria above may be deleted. If you would like an explanation for why an image has been deleted, please contact one of the moderators (unfortunately, we do not have time to provide an explanation for each image).

Stock Library

The Stock Library will contain all images posted from those individuals that have given permission for their images to be used.
