The butterfly life cycle is an interesting addition to the QCA scheme which focuses mainly on flowering plants. It enables children to look further at a well known insect and build on their existing knowledge and understanding of life cycles.
This course on butterflies aims to teach children about the life cycle of butterflies while introducing some endangered British species. Children will learn about how they are being conserved and what can be done to help butterflies to survive. The course is mainly suitable for the summer months as butterflies can only be seen in their natural environment at this time.
Key Stage 1: Children will follow the stages of the butterfly life cycle but can take part in simple activities such as the introduction, simple observations and activities based on the parts of a butterfly. There are simplified work sheets for them to complete at the end.
Key Stage 2: Children will study the life cycle in greater detail using associated key vocabulary and will make a life cycle wheel. There are worksheets for them to complete at the end.
A very good internet site for children to find out more about butterflies and enhance their practical work is the Children's Butterfly Site at www.mesc.nbs.gov/butterfly-life-cycle.htm
