GARDEN BUTTERFLY DISTRIBUTION IN THE UK

A garden butterfly survey was carried out by Butterfly Conservation in 2002 which provided some interesting information from over 11,000 participants on the distribution and numbers of British butterflies. Everyone associates butterflies with warmth and sunshine, so not surprising many species are more widespread in Southern Britain than in the cooler North. Species such as Brimstone and Gatekeeper are far more widespread in the south whereas the Peacock butterfly is the commonest in Northern Britain. It occurred in almost 90% of surveyed gardens. The most common butterfly overall are the whites.

The top five butterflies were:-

Large White
Small White
Large White Small White
Red Admiral
Peacock
