MAKING A BUTTERFLY TABLE

Butterfly table Introduction - Butterflies are fun to watch and you can attract them to your garden by planting nectar rich shrubs such as buddleia. Try hanging a butterfly table outside a classroom or kitchen window and see how many species visit it.

Season – summer, early autumn

Resources –

Activity – Screw the eyes into the four corners of the plywood. Hang the table on a tree by threading two pieces of string, each one metre long, through the eyes and over a branch. Place the jam jar lids with sugar solution in them on the table to attract butterflies.

Extensions - Try making “flowers” out of coloured cards and placing the jam jar lids on them. Which colours do the butterflies prefer?

More information - Adult butterflies feed by sucking up sugary juices; they use their tongues to probe flowers for nectar. The flowers have to be a suitable design for the butterfly, which usually means shallow flowers or clusters. Butterflies also feed on juices from fruits, honey dew produced by aphids or even salty liquids from sweat or animal droppings.
