| PRIVET HAWK MOTH CATERPILLAR |
![]() |
Application – This activity illustrates how caterpillars hide from predators using camouflage. Time – around 20 minutes
Resources – Card caterpillars cut from photocopiable sheet, double sided sticky tape, scissors.
Activity - Give each child a caterpillar cut out of card (e.g. cereal box) with a strip of double-sided sticky tape down the center. Peel off the protective covering on the tape to reveal the sticky side and begin sticking. Explore the site, taking small pieces of leaves, bark, grass and seeds to stick onto the caterpillar until it is completely covered with a camouflaged coat, tailor-made to your site.
When everyone has finished, ask them to write their names on the back and then to hide their caterpillar within a designated area. Walk around as a group and see how many of the camouflaged caterpillars you can spot.
Did the children’s caterpillars successfully avoid being eaten? Can they think of other ways to camouflage them e.g. shape and
behaviour?
Risk Assessment – No undue risk
