Making Butterfly Models

BUTTERFLY MODELS

Application – Butterflies are ideal for artwork. This is a good activity to do after a butterfly walk.

Season – Any

Resources –
Some pliable wire
Tracing paper
Paints or felt tip pens
String
Coloured wool
Thread
Glue
Scissors

Activity – Bend the wire into the shape of the insect’s body and legs. Bend another length of wire into the shape of wings. Attach to the body. Wrap coloured wool around the body to make it solid and stitch in the ends. Trace the outline of the wings onto tracing paper. Colour them using felt tips or paints. Encourage the children to copy a butterfly that they have seen in their grassland. Cut out the wings and attach to the frames with glue. Trim the edges to the frame. Bend the wings into a life-like shape. Use the butterflies to make a mobile, attaching them by a thread, or add them to a wall mural of a hay meadow.

Risk assessment – No undue risk

Extensions – More butterflies
