FEELY FEET GAME

Introduction– This activity introduces the sensory importance of a butterfly's feet (tarsi).

Resources-
Blanket or rug
Bags of mystery feely objects (big enough for children to put their feet into.
Examples of suitable feely objects- ping pong ball, cotton reel, rice, sand, large stone, pebbles, scrunched up newspaper, wine corks, dried pasta., wool.

Activity– Sit the children in a circle on the rug with one shoe and sock off. Pass the bags around asking the children to use their toes to work out what is inside. Ask the children to keep their guesses to themselves. Explain that this is what butterflies do when they land on a plant.

When everyone has had a chance to feel the contents of all the bags ask the children to imagine that they are a particular type of butterfly trying to find a special plant to lay their eggs on. As the child says his or her butterfly type whisper a food type ‘wool’ ‘rice’ etc. This time when the children feel the food type they are looking for they keep the bag. Encourage the children to look in the bag. Congratulate them on their right choice of food.
