Introduction — Antennae are sensory organs and are used for finding food and egg laying sites. In this game the butterflies have to find their food plants by smell.
Resources–
Pairs of small yogurt pots containing smelly items
Material covers for the pots secured with elastic band.
N.B. smelly items could include, coffee, sprigs of fresh herbs, chunks of soap, chunks of mature cheese, cotton wool balls soaked in vinegar, orange segments, washing powder, etc…..
Activity– Give one pot to each child. Tell them that they are butterflies and the smell in the pot is the smell of the plant that their caterpillars eat. They therefore have to lay their eggs on this plant. Tell them to explore the smells in each other's pot in order to find the one which is the same as the one they have. Keep going until everyone is paired off with a matching smell.
